From The Thursday Murder Club:

"It is Ian’s regular smoothie. Some raspberries, a fistful of spinach, Icelandic yogurt (Finnish, if they are out of Icelandic), spirulina, wheatgrass, acerola cherry powder, Chlorella, kelp, açai extract, cocoa nibs, zinc, beetroot essence, chia seeds, mango zest, and ginger. It is his own invention, and he calls it Keep it Simple."

Leisureguy,

@EllieK I had not realized that the author has such a splendid range of accomplishment. My wife told me of some.

Catie's Bubbles "A Midnight Dreary" was especially dreary because its fragrance was so faint. But good lather otherwise and a good shave with the Yaqi Vostok 70DC razor.

This shaving soap is green because it contains chlorophyll extract.

Ultra-processed foods linked to 32 health problems

Good article on the dangers of ultra-processed foods. https://archive.ph/t50Yh

(I think a whole-food non-animal diet is best; the vegan diet does allow refined and ultra-processed foods that include no animal-derived ingredients.)

"The proportion of calories in [US] youths’ diets that came from ultra-processed foods is 67%." https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/highly-processed-foods-form-bulk-us-youths-diets

How I use my fermented vegetables.

I could swear I saw a question asking about how I use the fermented vegetables I make, but I cannot find it anywhere.

Here's the answer:

The post I linked to has a link to the recipe for that batch: https://leisureguy.ca/2024/02/07/ferment-experiment/

In that post if you click"Ferment" in the category list, you'll see all my veggie ferment posts, which also include hot sauce:

Aha! I knew I had seen that question. Here's my answer:

I have fermented carrot sticks but .. meh. But now I'm thinking I might try fermenting a liter of jalapeños sliced into chunks, with some garlic cloves and a few dates (to help nourish the microbes). Shorter carrot sticks might be a good addition as well.

I'll certainly report on it if I do it, and I think I will. Thanks for the idea.

Today a CK-6 formula soap — more water-sensitive than the Maxima soap I used yesterday. I used Agharta, which has a lovely fragrance: "Ambergris, Amyris, French Vanilla Bean, Japanese Sandalwood, Cedar, and Oak Moss."

More of the amazing Maxima formula, with a fragrance I like even better.

Good Asian-inflected stir-fry, with a little help from the frozen-food section. This dish came out very well indeed: tasty, a variety of textures, excellent matchup to recipe checklist.

Another problem with highly processed foods: they generally contain (among other additives, like refined sugar, preservatives, food coloring, "natural" flavoring, and extra salt) emulsifiers.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jun/29/the-truth-about-emulsifiers-gut-health-microbiome

I see this as another reason to avoid refined and highly processed foods. More and more it seems that a whole-food diet that has a good distribution of vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, grains, and the like is the best approach.

Today's shaving soap is exceptionally good: the Maxima formula from Aion Skincare (formerly Grooming Dept). And this Spanish aftershave balm is terrific.

My tub of Grooming Dept Moisturizing Pre-Shave lasted 2 years 7 months, shaving 6 days a week. And for US$14, you can't be an Omega Pro 48 (10048) boar brush, one of my all-time favorite brushes.

Trump went off the teleprompter in an eruption of particularly demented fear and loathing. And he did it at the major "conservative" -- that is, right-wing extremist -- conference that welcomed Nazis and featured a social-media nutcase who said his ilk would finish the job they were doing on Jan. 6.

You would not know about all of this if your source of political news is the Washington Post, or the New York Times.

Leisureguy,

@dangillmor Do you have a link to where one might see it?

Straight razors strike me as having better aesthetics than safety razors. Example:
