Linux_in_a_Bit

@Linux_in_a_Bit@linuxrocks.online

👋Hi, I'm Aaron, nice to meet you!
📽️ I (sometimes) make videos on the internet that vaguely resemble good content.
📸 I also sometimes do little photography experiments.
🐧Of course I run Linux, it's in the name :)
🦣 I wanted to try out Mastodon about 2 years ago, and I ended up here. Never used Birdsite!

    That sounds correct, and is actually pretty interesting, I was mostly just making a bad joke but I appreciate this kind of interesting tidbit :blobcathuggies:

    :blobcatthink: Or you could look at some of the other consumer-friendly Linux alternatives...
    https://tuxedocomputers.com/
    https://system76.com/
    https://us.starlabs.systems/
    https://configurelaptop.eu/
    https://slimbook.es/
    I've been looking recently and I'm liking the look of Tuxedo's laptops (quality is supposedly excellent), but it's out of my price range.
    I'll probably end up going with NovaCustom for a few reasons...
    Remember to watch some reviews as well.

    it's amazing how much less it might matter that an interface design is bad specifically if in general it would just stay in one place.

    :ablobfoxbongo: Ready to learn how basic lossless compression works in one post?

    This is an example of an example sentence in an encryption program.

    1="an " 2="example " 3="is " 4="en" (note the spaces)
    Th3312of 12s4t4ce in 14cryption program.

    Now shrink it and compare it to the original:
    {1an 2example 3is 4en}Th3312of 12s4t4ce in 14cryption program.
    This is an example of an example sentence in an encryption program.

    See how it's 5 characters shorter? Imagine that but applied to a whole book.
    It often gets easier the larger the thing your compressing is (but not always)

    Note that 'program' and the end of 'encryption' are very unique and can't be assigned numbers without making the sentence longer. This is referred to as a high entropy, basically meaning they are very information dense.
    Also note how hard it is to decode our 'compressed' sentence. This is why you have to extract a compressed file.

    Now for your homework:
    Fit this post in Twitter's character limit :blobcat3csmirk:

    Does anyone know why the right-wing is so attractive to people?

    Looking at the content, the overarching theme I see is the enjoyment of dehumanizing and bullying people and building pretenses to do that.

    Linux_in_a_Bit,
    @Linux_in_a_Bit@linuxrocks.online avatar

    @jookia
    That's fair.
    I do have the belief that the anti-LGBT rhetoric now gained traction very much the same way that Antisemitism gained political traction in Germany in the 30s and 40s.
    That is one of the many things I dislike about right wing politics.
    The main reason I believe (as you say, this is likely not true) I am somewhere near a "center" is that communism, and even true socialism are at best very impractical for various reasons, principally that it basically isn't possible to have a neutral, non corrupt government.
    Every civilization on earth (that I know of) has had a hierarchy of some sort.
    The best we can do is to make it so that the lowest class of the hierarchy is the smallest, and as well off as possible.

    A good point about massive activity pub instances is that they can flood small ones with content, driving up their hosting fees. Another good reason to reject these corporate instances out of hand.

    That is to say that your "Federated" timeline does NOT contain all the posts on the entire Fediverse, just posts from people somebody on your instance has followed, or a post that one of those people has boosted.

    Follow Adam Savage's method of tool buying: Get the cheapest usable/safe tool possible and if you actually use it enough to warrant it, get the more expensive one when the cheap one breaks or becomes unusable.

    :blobcatthink: Can there be echo chambers on the Fediverse?
    Absolutely :ablobcatattention:

    :blobcat_thisisfine: Here's 3 types:

    • Instance enabled echo chamber
    • Personal following enabled echo chamber
    • Personal blocklist enabled echo chamber

    :ablobcatwave: All of these tools serve a normal purpose, and therefore cannot easily be changed.

    It's how you use them that causes the problem. Be cognisant of that. :blobcatphoto:
