No, you just bought some early-access cyberpunk heist game on Steam because it was on offer and you thought it might be a laugh

It's Container Week at my building, and someone appears to have tossed a big-ass gaming rig of uncertain (to me) vintage. Even left the HDD in there, which is sloppy opsec, but whatevs. Guess we'll have to try to boot it with Linux USB stick, see it it's worth fixing up; pretty much guarantee it'll run better games than either of my two laptops.

Anyone here able to help a brother out with what is presumably a very simple REGEX query for someone who knows what they're doing, but a nightmare for someone who doesn't?

I have a long old string in which colons (:) appear in various places. Colons which follow immediately after a letter, number or symbol character, I want to get rid of; colons which follow a whitespace character, I want to keep.

So, selecting for colons immediately after anything other than a whitespace.

HOW????!

Thanks to @thejaymo for introducing me to Notion and thus quite plausibly draining a vast amount of my cognitive bandwidth on learning a new platform thx buddy

(Snark aside, Notion looks like it could be a pretty good tool for managing MAH BIZNIZ, and my enthusiasm is genuine, if tempered by many bitter years of "surely this will be the thing that allows me to finally get me shit together in a comprehensive way!")

TFW you're waiting on the final decision on your final grant application (due today!) and you have things to do and all you can really manage is to sit, vibrating slightly, and scream internally at yourself every time you think of refreshing your inbox

Has anyone else noticed this thing where the RSS feeds of WP-dot-com-based blogs are suddenly kicking out messages that inform you to resub to a totally new feed URLfrom a service called follow.it, which is some sort of freemium RSS-as-a-service offer?

In short, I think Automattic's's hunger for enshittificatory moves has finally turned to the legacy of WP.com. If you're still blogging there, you might want to think about changing platforms.

(Edited to frame the correct platform.)

So I know I'm pretty late to this particular party, but that German series, Dark? Holy crap, that's some clever writing. Myself and L____ are nearly at the end of the first season, and I'm still really engaged with it. So many of the temptations around a time-hole plot gimmick successfully avoided! The urge to explain and infodump largely suppressed! The cinematography, always expressing the nominative determinism of the whole thing! The cast of deeply melancholic and miserable rural Germans!

Just spent a few hours dungeon-crawling the world of Obsidian user advice, and I conclude that a) I'm nowhere near as much of a nerd as I once thought, b) there are some incredibly clever and organised people in the world, and c) there's a subset thereof who have incredibly intricate Obsidian vaults that contain little else but structured guidance on how to build incredibly intricate Obsidian vaults that contain little else but structured guidance on how to build incredibly intricate Obsidian...

Some people find it weird or funny (or both) that I actually schedule blocks of time for writing emails -- as in "a block of time for one particular email" rather than "a block of time for writing multiple emails".

These are invariably people who have never received an email from me before.

Fucking Postnord and their import VAT grift. 8kr of actual tax owed, 75 kr for the privilege of handling it. That's what happens when you privatise your tax collection systems, I guess.

Question to those who speak better Swedish than I do (which is pretty much any Swedish speaker):

What is the distinction between omsorg and vård? Both translate broadly into English as "care", but when they're used with reference to e.g. labour shortages, some sort of distinction is being made as to specific types (or fields?) of care.

Please enlighten a feckless utlänning, tack så mycket!

Well, after roadtesting it in a one-on-one meeting between two people in places with good stable internet connections, I'm not sure Jitsi is ready to stand as a comparable replacement for Z**m.

Anyone got any other vidconf alternatives worth trying? Bonus points for open-source and/or ethical business practices.

Scrubbing out a very cluttered inbox, and here's an email-to-self, date 6 June 2021, no body text, just the subject line "Oxytocin Jones".

I have no idea what this was about. Character name idea? Prospective poem title? Something I was supposed to look up or contact someone about?

I dunno. Put it this way: if you are Oxytocin Jones, or they are someone you know, ah, get in touch? Maybe I've owed you an email for two plus years?

So totally exhausted and enraged by the torrents of chippy AI bullshit coming from every damned direction, from sources that really should know better as well as the same old grifty usual suspects. Clinging to the hope that the saturation is an indicator that we're in a bubble at peak manic froth, and that this time next year we'll be making jokes about it like we're now making jokes about NFTs and crypto.

TFW three or four days of a vague yet oppressive sense of existential dread and lack of focus finally hatches into the headcold which, with hindsight, it was always going to turn out to be.

47 years in this body, now; you'd think I'd recognise those prelude symptoms for what they are by now. But maybe something about them encourages you to doubt your interpretation of them, and come up instead with more novel readings.

So I guess now the ToC has dropped officially I can announce that, to my enduring surprise, one of my stories appears in Jared Shurin's Big Book of Cyberpunk.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/700576/the-big-book-of-cyberpunk-by-jared-shurin/

"Los Piratas del Mar de Plastico" was commissioned by @bruces for the 2014 Twelve Tomorrows antho from MIT Press, which was surprise enough, but Gardner Dozois picked it up for his annual Best Of the following year. And now this! File under "unexpected accolades", I guess. :)

The arrival in Malmö of That Song Contest is heralded by the appearance on local public transport of public service announcements reminding people that buying sex is illegal here, and that is telling me something I did not know or expect about the audience for this thing

Reading this report about the massive projected overcapacity of factories for making lithium-based batteries in the very near future, and hoping that all y'all "buy an EV, save the climate!" types are gonna buy, like, ten of them and give them away as Xmas gifts or something
