@polinski I wish I could claim I'd invented the term, but it's a commonplace of psychology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction_(psychology)#Burst#Burst)

You're right about it making a good band name, though! Shame I have no band to give it to...

Oh, man. I know that journalism is in a hard spot, but even so I gotta say that seeing a Robinhood ad in a 404media story about ticket scalping just feels... wrong, somehow. All the things they could possibly promote, and they've gone with the STONKS platform.

I mean, it's not exactly a milkshake duck moment, but it does rather rust the chrome of their knight-in-armour image, doesn't it?

ingrid, to random

I beg your pardon

PaulGrahamRaven,

@ingrid This is a term used also in twitching, which is what eccentric Brits of a certain class call birdwatching

It makes me happy that there are academics studying hopeful climate storytelling. (I'm setting up an interview for my participation in the second study of this type)

@susankayequinn I've worked with the IU futures crew. Good people, good scholars.

@susankayequinn No, I was talking of the folk at Utrecht, as in the student thesis in yr original toot. Don't know anyone at Indiana. :)

@susankayequinn (And now I notice my own typo: I meant UU, not IU, sorry.)

Yeah, when I read "you're on one", this Nineties veteran thought "nah mate, you're on one"

"Instead of engaging with people and organizations hurling weaponized messages at you, do anything else. Write a letter, sit in a garden, talk to a friend, play a game, listen to music, or seek out information that isn’t laced with lies and threats. We won’t end this culture war by manufacturing better weapons. We must refuse to fight. We must rebuild our public sphere, not nuke it from orbit."

Very wise words from @annaleen on life in a psyops-saturated culture.

PaulGrahamRaven,
@PaulGrahamRaven@assemblag.es avatar

(That quote ganked from their latest newsletter, which you can find here: https://buttondown.email/thehypothesis/archive/how-to-recognize-a-psyop-in-three-easy-steps/

Finding it hard to articulate how much of a relief it is to hear someone make this argument. After two decades of ratchet-effect culture war bullshit, it's desperately needed, on this side of the Atlantic as much as t'other.)

I’m sure that Nick Bostrom’s move from AI doomer to “maybe AI is going to save us” has absolutely nothing to do with AI making a lot of money for people who he wants to fund him.

Oh OK. Given the topic, I'mma STFU and stop carping. Though if we're at the "exasperated yet gnomic responses-to-memes" stage of the cycle, I doubt my presence or absence from the discourse will make the damnedest bit of difference.

The arrival in Malmö of That Song Contest is heralded by the appearance on local public transport of public service announcements reminding people that buying sex is illegal here, and that is telling me something I did not know or expect about the audience for this thing

PaulGrahamRaven,
@PaulGrahamRaven@assemblag.es avatar

@bestdeadends More the tacit implication that this week there are presumed to be a higher than normal quotient of sex buyers? Or at least that the powers that be would like to suggest that there are, which -- now I come to think of it -- may be the more likely interpretation

PaulGrahamRaven,
@PaulGrahamRaven@assemblag.es avatar

@benjaoming I agree it's not great, but if you think this is an intense surveillance dystopia, I recommend never being in a UK city that's playing host to even a totally regular domestic-league football game
