VM suggestion for gaming?

Welp, it’s finally happened. Windows 10 has become so bloated, slow, and spooky that I finally have decided to bite the bullet and set up a VM on my linux Mint partition. Do you have any suggestions for a virtual machine? My PC is a relatively basic mid-range business laptop, 8gb of ram, no GPU, only a few years old. I’m a...

I wouldn’t virtualize windows with 8gb ram. Also, gaming on a VM normally is not possible, unless you want to pass a GPU to it, which isn’t possible on a laptop. I’d say dual boot. Have a your main linux system where you do your work stuff and a windows one for 2 games that don’t run on linux. Though, unless you play those few games, you’ll probably be fine even without windows, as most games tend to run fine on linux these days.

Nah it’s more like xorg bad because:

  • It cannot handle multi monitors well
  • it’s slow as shit
  • you cannot have desktop animations and do anything graphically intensive
  • it’s buggy
  • Xorg screen sharing sucks… It just does. I know I’m gonna get shit on for this, but pipewire screensharing is way better when it works.
  • No variable refresh rate support
  • No plans for HDR support
  • No 1:1 touchpad gestures (elementary os not included)

Wayland is just better, unless you have a very niche hardware setup or are trying to use an older Nvidia GPU with the proprietary driver…

I dislike Wayland

Why?

RedHat bad

What does that have to do with Wayland?

RedHat BAD!!!1!1!1!!!

Average Wayland hater

You know that RedHat controls Xorg, right? Like… X11 is a RedHat thing.

no idea, it’s a part of my name and the number 300… yeah

Try Vesktop, it’s had seamless audio screenshare on pipewire for a while

I don’t get why some people argue over text editors… Just use whatever works. I like VSCode, not because it’s the best or the fastest or the lightest.

It works and it does all I need it to do, which is all that I need from a text editor.

oops

VSCode is the best for me, simple, good UI, extensions, 0 setup required, can run on practically anything created after the dinosaur age (early 2000s).

Working on my website and messing around trying to get AMD ROCm to work, so I can run local LLMs faster… Nothing much really

I’m not usually one to blame the distro but… as another comment here has stated, “Most stable manjaro experience”. Try EndeavorOS, it’s manjaro but not bad.

At 1st it was arch, used it for about a year and a half, but dropped it after they broke grub. Then I went to fedora for a while, which I like a lot, however I’m running Gentoo atm

I only use the highest of grade when it comes to hardware

Case: found in the trash

Motherboard: some random Asus AM3 board I got as a hand-me down.

CPU: AMD FX-8320E (8 core)

RAM: 16GB

Storage: 5x2tb hdds + 128gb SSD and a 32GB flash drive as a boot device

That’s it… My entire “homelab”

Unless you are using like a 64GB drive, not really. Ig flatpaks are as bit more annoying to start from the terminal

How do I install Nvidia drivers

On fedora it’s simple, you enable 3rd party repositories during install and then you install it from the software center.

Does Wayland work with Nvidia

Your experience will vary, it works fine for some and not so fine for others afaik.

Most distros are moving to Wayland, how do I ensure an Xorg session.

Distros that are moving to Wayland still provide an Xorg session and probably will do so for the foreseeable future.

Will proton work on fedora.

Yes. Proton is distro independent, it’s a tool, provided by steam and it doesn’t really care what distro you are running. Remember to enable steamplay for all games from the steam settings before you do anything else.

Will installing steam as a flatpaks work?

Yes. I’ve heard that some people have had issues with the steam flatpak, but I personally haven’t, it should work fine.

Can you not play anticheat games.

Entirely depends on the game you wanna play. Some anticheat games work, others don’t. Check the game you wanna play on protondb to see if it works. That being said, afaik anticheat support outside steam is basically a non existent, so if you like playing valorant (you poor, poor soul) or Fortnite for example, you’re kinda out of luck, unless you wanna dual boot.

Note: Try the distro before installing, live ISOs exist for a reason.

Note 2: Take a look at ventoy

I played Apex legends on a VM, before it worked on linux and never really had issues with AC. I’d just say that if you wanna play games with an intrusive AC on a VM, you should just accept the risk and roll with it…

Definitely go with an external nvme enclosure

Are there any immutable distros meant for NAS systems or home servers?

Edit2: OK Per feedback I am going to have a dedicated external NAS and a separate homeserver. The NAS will probably run TrueNAS. The homeserver will use an immutable os like fedora silverblue. I am doing a dedicated NAS because it can be good at doing one thing - serving files and making backups. Then my homeserver can be good...

No, as it’s just my main desktop, my laptop and an isolated PiHole VM

I wish Gentoo would make important information like unmasking packages more easily accessible, like directly into the handbook itself so that I don’t have to search how to do it every time I need to unmask a package (I always forget how to).

I also wish alpine Linux had an option to use glibc instead of musl
