Let’s announce something here for a change instead of the other place: I’m launching a re:Invent photo scavenger hunt.

@siracusa Strangers would ideally not be able to see my shirt size at ten paces. 😕

@Quinnypig So, with this IP space charge, I guess this improves the economics of a NAT gateway somewhat? Or...something to that effect?

Quinnypig,
@Quinnypig@awscommunity.social avatar

@ian egress only ipv6 gateways are free!

I'm glad to hear DHH is is in the news again: it reminded me that it was time to finally cancel my hey.com account.

I'd stopped using it a year or two ago, but it took a while for me to be sure all important email was going back to my previous email address.

It's a shame - there are some interesting UI ideas in Hey - but it's been clear for a while that I don't want to be associated with that guy every time I send an email.

Quinnypig,
@Quinnypig@awscommunity.social avatar

@kkuchta It's increasingly clear that the actual products the company makes exist solely to provide a basis of authority from which to shitpost about things in the worst possible way.

It's disappointing.

IRL, a social media app that raised $200M claimed to have 20 million users. 19 million of them turned out to be bots.

What is it about SoftBank that attracted so many grifters?

Good morning from the AWS Public Sector Summit keynote; I have filed out the forms in triplicate and made my way to my seat. Cloud policy wonks, this thread's for you.

Why am I here? Because I have a growing number of public sector clients, of course. It turns out that even governments feel the sting of the AWS bill

AWS VP Max Peterson takes the stage. Digging the Ukraine pin.

"We're going to include a lot of QR codes on the slides today," because everyone loves scanning those things like they're collecting Pokémon.

"Thanks to our Emerald and Platinum sponsors." If your life depends on it, you cannot tell which one of those is the higher sponsorship tier. This is what we call a leaky abstraction.

There are really neat aspects to Public Sector. Usually when you screw up an IAM policy or blow the AWS budget it's a wrist-slap and a policy violation. For some of these customers, that's an honest-to-god FELONY.

The stakes are higher than the GovCloud data egress rate.

Quinnypig,
@Quinnypig@awscommunity.social avatar

It's hard to generalize about such a broad group of customers, but the unifying thread so far seems to be "mission-driven." It makes sense; some of these folks are giving up an I-am-not-exaggerating 3x salary increase by working in the public sector instead of going corporate.

There's a deep, deep reliance on AWS partners in this sector, so the first announcement is that they're expanding their partner network in some way they didn't spell out on the slide and I'm a visual learner.

What AWS believes you're thinking: "Wow, a 94% cost savings?! The cloud is SUPER economical!"

What you're actually thinking: "What the HELL were they doing in the data center, fueling it by burning stacks of money in a furnace?"

Quinnypig,
@Quinnypig@awscommunity.social avatar

Project ARGUS is on the the Marketplace, it's not an AWS product. Don't let the AWS branding / bad product name mislead you.

Quinnypig,
@Quinnypig@awscommunity.social avatar

The air outside is horrible because of the wildfires in Canada. AWS has leaned into its trademark brand tone-deafness and has a smoke machine in the keynote hall.

But yes, not hiring a backfill CMO for over a year is working out super, super well for them.

First guest speaker is Ed Lein, senior investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science.

If this were the west coast he'd be talking about implanting computers in brains, but it's the east coast so he's talking about biological sciences that are bound to reality rather than billionaire wet dreams.

There's a link to their site (cia.gov/tech) that includes this gem. They sure are asking for a lot of information that they pretend they don't already have about you.

"You might have heard about Generative AI." So did Amazon, once OpenAI and Azure started talking about it.

This is now listed as "Available." Generally so, or the preview that nobody's getting accepted into?

Quinnypig,
@Quinnypig@awscommunity.social avatar

Also talking about CodeWhisperer, which is Amazon Basics GitHub Copilot. Seriously, there's no contest because Copilot is scary good.

Man, watching Twitter walk back basically every change it makes is increasingly depressing. Not that these changes are good, mind you--but rather that nobody's thinking these things through in any sense ahead of time.
