As you might know, I have no academic training in computing of any kind. My training was in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

It is, therefore, often a surprise when I encounter a CS paper (often a vintage one) and realize just how beautifully it is written and what it expresses.

For me, Scala almost offers too much flexibility and expressiveness. I still remember frustrations with implicits.

“But Scala also has its set of challenges when it comes to writing lean code. The language is both very flexible and very expressive. Its flexibility allows code bases to be written in many different styles. Its expressiveness can encourage over-abstraction. This means that trying to find your way in an unfamiliar Scala codebase is sometimes difficult.”

@mweagle yeah… there are too many flavors of scala… rails cemented ruby into a single set of patterns… never happened in Scala-land

Reminds me of when NeXT did a big layoff in 1992. They started by firing the person in the mail room. Steve Jobs had to hand address the fedex envelopes with termination notices to impacted NeXT employees who did not work out of headquarters.

i'm going to be sitting for a few days with this info, that cops are so ineffective at property crime that they don't even recognize a common bike lock when they see one

dpp,
@dpp@mastodon.social avatar

@robey this is incorrect. Cops are ineffective on property crime that one can’t demonstrate was committed by a non-white person.

My father, Fred Pollak, was born on this day in 1935 in Vienna. My father and his parents escaped the Nazis in 1938 and immigrated to the US.

My father passed in 2008. May he rest in peace.

I am remembering his birthday as part of remembering who he was and celebrating all that he did for me and my kids.

Aligning people is churn. Not aligning people is creating snowflakes and churn. There is no way to win. The only winning move is not to play.

dpp,
@dpp@mastodon.social avatar

@rakyll my 2 cents…

I find aligning incentives aligns people. Sometimes that’s hard… one needs 3+ dimensions of incentives to avoid gaming.

Sometimes it’s easy… I had a team where the staff engineers (older and all men) would dominate meetings. I explained that I would evaluate the senior+ engineers on how the early in career folks did (50/50 women/men)

The young folks spoke up and participated actively in design and implementation. And everyone was happier… even the older men.

My 2 cents

I told y'all, cops don't do what you think they do.🤷🏿‍♂️

Black folk know this from lived experience. Some white folk only learn this when they go to report a theft or sexual assault and find out that the $11B/year NYPD are not equipped to handle that.

@mekkaokereke @robey a coworker had his bike stolen. He had gps on the bike and told the cops exactly where it was. He even went to the location and could see his bike through the window. The cops did nothing!
