The Tories have so much to learn from geese https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/10/02/the-tories-have-so-much-to-learn-from-geese/. Geese don’t really on leaders. They rely on cooperation. And unlike the Tories, they think that there is a collective duty to look after the weak. How have the Tories got it so wrong?

Eighteen months from an election the available options do not look compelling https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/07/06/eighteen-months-from-an-election-the-available-options-do-not-look-compelling/. Thinking about who to vote for in the forthcoming general election is not easy right now when there is an absence of vision in English politics.

HS2 was always a white elephant https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/09/25/hs2-was-always-a-white-elephant/. We never needed a fast train route to London. What we needed were working trains across the whole country and a functioning national grid.

We need to tax the wealthiest more if we are to to tackle climate change https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/11/20/we-need-to-tax-the-wealthiest-more-if-we-are-to-to-tackle-climate-change/ The wealthy are over-consuming our planet, literally heating it to beyond survival human survival point. We need to tax them more to stop their excess consumption. Unless we do we are in very deep trouble.

We need emergency legislation to private a total water supply and financial meltdown if Thames Water fails https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/12/15/we-need-emergency-legislation-to-private-a-total-water-supply-and-financial-meltdown-if-thames-water-fails/. Thames Water has admitted that it cannot repay its loan financiers. If it goes into insolvency the water supply to one-quarter of the people in the UK would be at risk but we have no emergency legislation in place to protect those people or the country from the mayhem that could follow. If emergency legislation is needed in the UK right now, this is what we need.

There is a growing world rice crisis. What are we going to do about the humanitarian crisis that could flow from it? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/10/24/there-is-a-growing-world-rice-crisis-what-are-we-going-to-do-about-the-humanitarian-crisis-that-could-flow-from-it/. If hundreds of millions of people go hungry, what will we do? Will we watch, or will we tackle the causes of this issue - like climate change? It's time to decide.

Arguments for relaxing bankers’ bonuses are bankrupt https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/10/25/arguments-for-relaxing-bankers-bonuses-are-bankrupt/. Bankers’ bonuses are an indication of the exploitation of society by financial capital. They measure how far we have fallen, and not how good we are at doing anything. But the Tories love them anyway.

It feels like some people are driving the world towards insanity, and no one is sure how to stop them https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/12/12/it-feels-like-some-people-are-driving-the-world-towards-insanity-and-no-one-is-sure-how-to-stop-them/. Sunak’s Rwanda Bill is insane. So is OPEC’s defence of fossil fuel use at COP28. Despite that the attempts to promote both are serious, deeply dangerous and profoundly worrying. How do we stop this?

Donald Trump poses the biggest global danger of 2024 https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/11/17/donald-trump-poses-the-biggest-global-danger-of-2024/. I don't always agree with The Economist. Our worldviews are different. But it seems that we agree on the risk of and from a fascist President of the USA.

What does Starmer believe in? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/10/09/what-does-starmer-believe-in/. It seems that those with any drive for power in the UK reject the whole idea that ideas matter.

Or is it that Gove has won the argument against expertise?

And in that case are we domed to fail, with politicians endlessly repeating their mistakes until the whole system collapses?

Reeves and Starmer: maintainers of the status quo https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/07/09/reeves-and-starmer-maintainers-of-the-status-quo/ How did Labour come to be led by two people so profoundly conservative, as Reeves and Starmer so very obviously are on any issue you can think of?

Why has government funding for renewables run into a brick wall? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/08/08/why-has-government-funding-for-renewables-run-into-a-brick-wall/. We have an investment crisis in the UK – and it is time we came to terms with it https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/09/04/we-have-an-invetsment-crisis-in-the-uk-and-it-is-time-we-came-to-terms-with-it/. The concrete crisis in schools is symptomatic of a much bigger crisis in government - which suggests it is out of control and without the data and the understanding to put things right. We really are in trouble.

Politics in the UK should not be for sale https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/06/02/politics-in-the-uk-should-not-be-for-sale/ The first-past-the-post electoral system is a massive obstacle to democracy in the UK, but corporate donations are almost as significant. The time when corporate donors can try to buy power in the UK should be over, for good.
