You know how December is all about mince pies, and the run-up to Easter is all about hot cross buns?

There should be a special baked treat for every month in the year. Why isn't there? Why am I not enjoying a delicious April Cake or Spring Bun or whatever?

I have a big meeting with people from significant national organisations in a moment.

It's online, fortunately. But I am very nervous. It's one thing to have a meeting with people from my workplace who I know. Another thing entirely to have this kind of meeting.

It won't just be me, though, hopefully (unless lots of people have pulled out) so maybe I can just hide.

I bought a birthday gift for myself. Two bird artworks by @EdwardPhilips - I love them!

My room is very plain and bland, and I'm not allowed to hang/stick anything on the walls. So I've been musing on how to brighten it up. Eventually decided to buy a frame that could stand in front of the wall, and then I can decorate the frame as much as I like.

These are the first two things I've bought to attach to the frame. I'll get more in due course. The frame is sturdy enough, I could attach a little shelf and put some kind of sculpture or objet d'art up there. There's also room for a second frame to sit beside the first, maybe a third if I move things around. But that's for the future.

Apologies for the terrible lighting (it's a miserably dreich day), and the reflections of all the stuff. I've just realised, it looks a bit like the herring gull picture is a bit crumpled in the corner, but it isn't, that's just the reflection of the curtain.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Art! Everyone, go buy Edward's pictures. They're terrific. http://www.edwardphilips.co.uk/

As an alternative to the endless grey, here's a couple of umbrella pines enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine.

Not wishing to seem posh or anything, but I just had a prosciutto, taleggio and pear toastie for my tea. Very nice it was too.

I've made it. Finally, a week off. I'm so utterly exhausted and broken. But at least I have a week off now

Today being a day that required easy comfort food, I had beans on toast for lunch and I'm having pizza for dinner.

But it occurred to me: isn't beans on toast essentially just a really basic pizza?

Jealous of all your cats. Why can't I have a cat? Or a dog. Or a chinchilla, whatever. No fair.

Okay, I've cut my hair, I've cleaned the bathroom, I've done a little life admin, I've fed the birds, I've fed myself, now I think it's time to try and call the internet people.

Oh heavens. We're being hit by this big storm, it's blowing a hoolie and bucketing down, and there is a man on top of the roof opposite doing some kind of work. Yikes.

I thought of taking a picture but what if I distracted him?

Good, he seems to be making his way down again now. Yes, he's on the ladder. Blimey. This is not good weather for being on a roof!

Because it's my birthday, as I may have mentioned once or twice, I had another fancy sandwich for my tea. But this time made with bread, like a normal person.

Also: lamb steak, baby spinach, rocket, mint sauce, yoghurt and those lime-pickled onions I was talking about the other day. Fancy! Also DELICIOUS.

Dreamt I went to the chip shop. Woke up as I was just about to start eating. Gutted.

Reminds me, I have a question for enthusiasts.

Do collared doves nest in chimney pots? It's just I've been trying to figure out where the collared dove couple must be nesting as there isn't a suitable tree in the right kind of location.

Why is this yougov survey asking me when I last accessed the internet?

Is there a non-internet way to do an online survey? Can I just yell my answers into the void?

Like any reasonable person, I reacted to the strain of doing something very difficult by spending £120 on tea.

It's yet again very grey, but I probably need to go outside anyway. Ugh.

Right now however I'm listening to this new album by Bolis Pupul, who some of you may know (as I do) from his work with Charlotte Adigéry. It's fun, charming electronica, very enjoyable.

I was supposed to go do woodland volunteering this morning. I'd said I was going to go. I should go. It is unequivocally A Good Thing. I love the woods and I should want to help. I am clearly not a good person if I choose not to help the woods when I'm capable of doing so.

But I woke up about 4am in a panic, absolutely terrified of having to go and do the volunteering. Panicking about having to mask and Be A Normal Human around other volunteers. Panicking about all the mud (I am a very clumsy and ill-coordinated person and I find the effort to keep myself steady on uneven ground can get overwhelming). Panicking about having to saw through things which I'm so bad at because I'm clumsy and ill-coordinated and can't cut in a straight line. Panicking about having to work with other people whilst I try to saw. Panicking about other people trying to help whilst I take forever trying to cut something properly.

So I cried off. And I don't know if I can ever go again because these problems aren't going to go away. And if I was a good person then right now I'd be getting my stuff together, getting ready to leave and to help the woods that I love.

But I'm an absolute failure who can't even do a simple thing like cutting back plants before the spring, when it needs doing for the benefit of the community's woods. I hate myself. I don't want to be this person at all.

Morning everyone. It's a cold sunny morning, and I am very sleepy. Hope everyone is well.

My earworm this morning and last night has been When She Plays the Toy Piano by the Magnetic Fields. https://youtu.be/yk_1mr-7Egw

Also, there is someone sat at the bus station, smoking. It seems so uncommon now, I forget how revolting the smell is. Can't remember the last time I was bothered by an actual smoker (rather than someone vaping, which also smells bad but differently so).

Anyone else waking up today and thinking, how is it so cold all of a sudden?

It was over 20° on Tuesday. My garden thermometer says it's 3° right now. I'm going to have to put the damn heating on.

When my mother phones, and asks me if I've been up to anything, would be nice if she'd allow me to say more than one brief sentence before spending the next half hour talking about every single thing that has happened to her the previous few days.

Mowed the stupid lawn. Another good thing about getting rid of that lawn, if I could do so, would be that it might stop people letting their dog shit on it.

Why would you let your dog shit on someone's lawn anyway? And not pick it up? The fuck is wrong with some dog owners?

I love dogs, I've had dogs in the past, I wouldn't dream of letting one shit on someone's lawn.

I've given the two dense round shrubs at the front a haircut. One's a juniper of some kind, the other... I can't remember. I did ask here once and someone gave me an answer, but I've forgotten it. Anyway, it's a shrub and it needed a haircut.

They're right at the front of the property, and have a tendency to grow over the public footpath, so I have to trim them to make sure people can still get past. Someone last year advised me to trim every April and August... but, like I said earlier, April was shit so it's May now.

By the way, in case anyone worries, no, there aren't nesting birds in there (too low to the ground, I suspect).

I don't know why I'm telling you all this. It's not very interesting.
