I watch y'all in the comments of my posts connecting with and comforting each other, and it warms my heart. Mastodon isn't a perfect place, but the humanity I see here makes me proud to be a part of it. The world needs more of this.

@RickiTarr It's like that Susan Sontag quote, about how 10% of the population is cruel no matter what, 10% is merciful no matter what, and the remaining 80% can be moved in either direction.

10% of social media users will be cruel online, 10% will be merciful, and the other 80% will be cruel if the algorithm tells them to be cruel.

With no algorithm we see that most people are, broadly speaking, nice.

Have you ever met someone who lies all the time, but doesn't seem to realize they are lying?

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr If this includes 'sufficiently arrogant as to believe that whatever they think is automatically true', then very definitely yes.

It's so exhausting trying to deal with someone who sees themselves as the sole source of absolute truth in the world.

Exciting news!

We've had no buses at all since the 28th of October, and none in two of the four weeks before that. Go North East staff were on strike because of appallingly unfair pay and conditions.

The workers and unions bravely kept going in spite of the hardship, until the company finally gave them a deal they could accept. So the strike ends today!

Hurrah for unions!

And hurrah for the buses coming back!

And a loud jeering for the company who would rather run no buses for weeks on end than pay fairly.

This week's theme for is . So I'm going very old.

This song is Crazy Blues by Mamie Smith. In early 1920, Smith became the first Black singer to have a record released - in the face of huge opposition from the wider music industry - with That Thing Called Love.

But her next release, Crazy Blues, had the biggest impact. At a time when songs called this-or-that Blues were invariably recorded by white artists, this was the first such release not just by a Black singer but with a Black band (That Thing Called Love featured the white Okeh Rags Orchestra, but Smith assembled her own all-Black band, the Jazz Hounds, before recording Crazy Blues) - and crucially, it was immensely popular. The huge numbers in which the record sold brought down the industry's colour bar, ending the insistence on Black music being exclusively performed by white musicians.

Perhaps the single most influential record ever released, maybe this isn't so much as .

Importance of tactical voting, in a simple chart.

Both seats were won by Labour with fairly slender and almost identical majorities, both around 1,300.

In Tamworth, tactical voting was very much for Labour. LibDem vote dropped a little, in a seat they had no chance of winning, and without tactical voting the Tories might've just held the seat.

In Mid Beds, both Labour and LibDems fought for the seat equally, both believing they had the best chance of winning. As a result, the Tories almost clung on. Tactical voting would've made that a much more secure result, and might well be the difference in a general election.

Why have young people turned away from the ?

John Burn-Murdoch (FT) suggests (not implausibly) that two factors loom large:

  1. the & the increased difficulty the young have owning their own home;

which also goes some way to explaining while the abandonment of the right by the young is more extreme in the Uk than elsewhere (even it is a broad global trend).

the right-wing gerontocracy may have gone too far & taken too much?

Chart: Brexit appears to have acted as a trigger fro young Britons souring on the Tories. % of Britons aged 18-34 saying they 'strongly dislike' the Conservative Party. Shows before the EU Referendu, proportion was relatively stable at 20%, but since it has risen from that level to around 40% (i.e. doubled)

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Why have young people turned against politicians who are committed to destroying the lives of young people? It sure is a mystery.

The (from @yourfutureex via @neurothing) is .

This theme is for songs that are famed much-loved classics that you've absolutely had enough of. I'm tempted to say 'the entire Beatles canon', but I'll pick five songs like I'm supposed to.

And yes, I know it's very easy and predictable to hate on the Beatles, but that's not what I'm doing here. There are lots of very popular bands that I've never liked at all, like Pink Floyd, Oasis, Steely Dan, and so on. But I liked the Beatles, I really did, until I got absolutely sick of not just the Beatles but the endless shit that goes around them. I hear there's going to be four Beatles biopics coming. A Ringo Starr biopic?!? Nobody has ever wanted or needed that. Yeesh. Sick of this shit.

So, here, four Beatles songs that particularly get on my wick, plus one very obvious and inexplicably popular Beatles-adjacent monstrosity. You're not getting any links because you already know these songs off by heart.

The Beatles - Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (If this was by literally anybody else it would shunned in polite society)

The Beatles - The Long and Winding Road (there's an appalling scene in the film Yesterday which really turned me against this one)

The Beatles - Taxman (seriously, you actually wrote those words? ffs George get a grip)

The Beatles - Yellow Submarine (not blaming the Beatles specifically for this, it's just the most grotesquely ill-used song in history)

John Lennon - Imagine (fuck off and keep fucking off until you've reached the very outer limits of fuck off and then fuck off a bit more)

Love, power, cakes and general good vibes to everyone who is visible, invisible, hoping to be visible, or has any other relationship with visibility in this unreasonable and hard world.

Admittedly, I don't have cake available right now, but you're all welcome to come around to mine for a hot cross bun or a biscuit or whatever chocolate I have in the cupboard.
