According to a survey of 1,000 U.S. streaming users, nearly one in four respondents say Netflix has gotten worse over the past year. That same group said it was still the overall favorite streamer. Its subscriber numbers are growing too — by the end of March 2024 it had 270 million around the world. Here's more from @IndieWire. What's your opinion on Netflix? Tell us in the comments which streaming service offers the most bang for your buck.

Some #goodnews that I was excited to pass around the office today. More #universities should be using large donations (and their endowments) this way.

It's December, so I'm adulting, and in the last two days I went to the optometrist and the dentist, which means I had to engage in professional-setting small talk, and all of it was about Christmas. Just, like, all of it. With multiple people each time.

I didn't have my guard up at the optometrist so I said, "I celebrate Chanukah," forgetting that many Oregonians have never met a Jew, so I had to explain what it was. I went with: "it's just presents and candles."

"I love candles!" she said.

@fraying I guess I should not be surprised by this but it still makes me sad

@fraying I’m not religious but I’ve appreciated that my OR city hosts tree lighting & menorah lighting events and advertises both in newsletters etc.

@fraying I’m in Tigard so not too far from you, but there is a world of difference demographically.

@lilithsaintcrow the concept of “community care” read as a foreign concept, given in the US everything is so highly individualized.

A study on from 2020 is now peer-reviewed and published. The study gave $7500 cash to homeless people in Vancouver and compared their outcome versus a control group. The result was clear:

“The recipients of the cash transfers did not increase spending on drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, but did increase spending on food, clothes, and rent, according to self-reports. What’s more, they moved into stable housing faster and saved enough money to maintain financial security over the year of follow-up.”

Further, each person who moved into stable housing one year faster saves the city over $8000 per year, which makes this program cheaper than existing housing programs.

Universal Basic Income works. It sounds so obvious when you say it out loud, but: giving people cash lifts them out of poverty. We need to do that more.

“A Canadian study gave $7,500 to homeless people. Here’s how they spent it.”

@drahardja in many places, there needs to be more housing also - lots of places have such huge housing deficits even with an influx of cash people wouldn’t have a place to go.

Morning bounty: three kinds of avocados, two kinds of papayas, a dozen mac nuts, and about thirty pounds of mammee apples. Plus Kaylee, who chased the chickens away from the avos and insisted on being in the shot.
