I stumbled across this during work today. Apparently only making sure that my app runs on the latest LTS Ubuntu is "lazy" while making sure that it runs on the oldest still supported LTS Ubuntu and not having the energy to care about anything else is "good practice". I still have so much to learn from pros like this...

@brudibrau speaking from experience, that's a surefire way of getting burnt out as an open source developer.

In our buses, there is a warning announcement to grab on to something while you are standing followed by the somewhat clumsy translation
"Hold on tight
during the ride"
with a pronounced pause after "tight." It does make me cringe, but then it always reminds me of ELO's "Hold on tight to your dreams", which immediately starts playing in my head, and I like that.

@jyrgenn my wife and I are still joking about the "please remember to wear an FFP2 mask" and how the "mask" was pronounced like "mesk".

Germany has a tax on beer, but not on wine. This sounds counterintuitive, but thinking about how the state can make money, it's not all that surprising.

akrennmair, (edited )
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@tastingcraftbeer there once was an attempt to introduce a wine tax, in 1926. Wine producers rioted and destroyed the tax office of Bernkastel, and that was the end of that.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@Mutedog @tastingcraftbeer I suppose because beer has always been taxed in some shape or form, whether directly or indirectly (malt tax)? The question more interesting to me is why the authorities caved in so quickly to violence.

@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@robpike one thing I think you did absolutely right was to provide a FFI from the very first day of Go being publicly available, in the form of cgo. To me it showed that Go wanted to follow a pragmatic route of integrating/wrapping existing C code to get (some) complex things done in the beginning.

It's also what I played with when I wrote my first few lines of Go code. I was really impressed how intuitively I could whip this together. https://github.com/akrennmair/gopcap/commit/d141b24473a7aaadf723b2eb02b9804749214e71

I forgot to take any pictures of yesterday's brew day, but these are what the Kräusen look like about 22 hours after pitching the yeast (Lallemand's Verdant IPA strain) into 20.7°P (1.086) wort brewed from pale malt, a bit of black malt, and home-made dark invert sugar.

akrennmair, to homebrewing
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

My setup to make dark invert sugar because tomorrow is brew day. This is for an Old Ale that is vaguely inspired by Gale's Prize Old Ale (see here for a homebrew clone recipe: https://byo.com/recipe/gales-prize-old-ale-clone/ ), except I'm leaving out the torrified wheat, use all Target hops, and inoculate with Gueuze dregs.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

After 150 minutes of holding it between 115 and 121°C, that's how much it darkened. So that should be Invert Sugar No. 3 now.

akrennmair,

@sushee is this a new thing now? I've lived in Berlin for 15 years now (even in the very same flat!), and 2023 is the first time I need to take care of reading my electricity meter and reporting numbers myself. And it seems like everyone involved has made that as difficult as bureaucratically possible. The only slight upside seems to be that Vattenfall has reported my readings to Stromnetz Berlin already, so at least some players seem to have some automation in place. sigh

The new apartment is a good opportunity to crack open my "2023 in a bottle", the oak-aged barleywine I brewed back in January.

It's a lovely beer. There is a lot of caramelly malt action going on but the beer feels surprisingly dry and effervescent due to the little tannic bite from the oak chips and the spritzy carbonation from the bottle conditioning with fresh yeast. A warm touch of alcohol from the brandy and some peach that I can't pinpoint complete this really complex beer.

But...

It nags at me when people say "why can't Berlin just do as Paris does with parking and cycling policy?”

The answer - in large part - is Anne Hidalgo has some power to act in Ville de Paris, the inner city, where only 1/5 of the urban population live. No one has power to act in inner Berlin, only for the whole Land - and that's harder

Mapped and explained here: https://jonworth.eu/why-berlin-cant-just-do-as-paris-does-on-cycling-and-parking-policy/

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@jon what doesn't help (but is an entirely separate issue) is that Berlin's current transportation senator, Manja Schreiner, is a car ideologue, and hates anyone and anything that could threaten the status quo of driving and parking in Berlin.

Who says there is no ß in English? There certainly was in 1647.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@JessicaS in German, ß started as a ligature of ſ and ʒ "z with undersling" (an informal name for ß is "esszett", i.e. how you'd pronounce sz as separate letters). Here it's different, as the ß in English seemed to be a ligature of ſ and s. AFAIK, the ſs Antiqua ligature was influential in the design of the ſʒ ligature when German moved away from blackletter, but you can still see the "old" shape in some fonts, e.g. Berlin street signs.
