Here, I got a hot take about Thornbridge's Burton Union: they should brew a Bavarian Weissbier (aka Weizenbier/Hefeweizen) on it.

Marston's brewery retired their Burton Union systems in early 2024. It was announced yesterday that one of their Burton Union sets was handed over to Thornbridge brewery where it will be used to brew historic beers: https://www.beerguild.co.uk/news/carlsberg-marstons-brewing-company-and-thornbridge-brewery-find-a-new-home-for-burton-union-sets/

Pete Brown has more about this: apparently Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery was involved in making this possible.

Remember that Decoction-mashed Bière de Garde Blonde with Cascade Hops I made back in January? It makes me sad to say this but I think I will pour it down the drain. We just had a glass and it was not great. It had a berry-fruityness and I wasn't sure whether the Nottingham yeast got too hot or the Cascade went wack-a-doodle. Too sweet, too sticky, very unpleasant. But eh, I have decided that if I ruin my liver with alcohol it has to be with stuff that I like so this goes down the drain tomorrow

STOP DOING HARDLINKS

INODES WERE NOT MEANT TO EXIST IN MULTIPLE DIRECTORIES

YEARS OF FILES yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND for being in more than one directory

Wanted to reference files from more than one directory anyway? We had a tool for that: it was called "SYMLINKS"

"Hello I would like different permissions on this file based on path" They have played us for absolute fools

This weekend I had a little beer tasting with my family and I told them what Gose is.

Today my mother texts me with a screenshot from some TV quiz show where the final question was "Where does the beer style of Gose originate from?" and she was all "I KNEW THE ANSWER AND THEY DIDN'T AND THEY LOST ALL THEIR MONEY!!!"

I'm so proud of her! 🤗

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@brudibrau there's this hilarious little German poem that can be found in a few old beer/brewing books: "Es ist zwar ein sehr gutes Bier, die Goslarische Gose, doch wenn man meint, sie sei im Bauch, so liegt sie in der Hose."
I assume that's not the reason why they didn't like it.

So I had it. Good beer - very much unlike the standard "Vienna Malt".
It was rather bitter, slight lemon/pithy edge to the bitterness, not overly lingering malt flavour, but it had the usual slightly medicinal element that Czech Lagers have, likely because they didn't change from their house Yeast / brewing/lager process.

I was really surprised by the colour profile, when I read your book in ~2019. So it was great to finally see it and try it in person.

@kazaii oh wow! It does sound quite good, and the beer is pretty pale! Also, I didn't expect that I was going to be mentioned by name. 😊

I really wonder where that slight medicinal flavour comes from, though.

I think the hardest part about introducing Universal Basic Income will be the decision on what dialect to use: Commodore BASIC? Atari BASIC? MSX? Or even VBA?

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@brudibrau if you want to get really into details, ask which hop farm, then look up which breweries have contracts with them. Locher for example is where Brasserie de la Senne and Schönramer get some of their hops from. In any case, having a hookup like that is pretty amazing.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@kazaii oh wow, I just checked it out, and they seem to be using the Vienna malt that Sugar Creek and Goldfinger developed. Definitely sounds super interesting, so if you go there, please report what it‘s like.

@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@kazaii it certainly looks amazing, so I hope it's going to be as good as that!

The more I brew and drink Czech pale lager the more it is pretty much the only thing I want to drink.

OK, the German lagers I’ve been brewing are also damn good. But there is something really different with a double or triple decoction and Saaz hops.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@sumisu3 yes! Specifically for me, it's also the type of beer that I cannot quite as easily get as German lagers. No point brewing them if I can buy great ones around the corner for €1 a bottle, but Czech beers (other than Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Staropramen in supermarkets; there's one bar serving Svijany and another one Vinohradsky here in Berlin) are pretty hard to get. So I need to brew that myself if I want to drink it, and I actually enjoy it.

In German, you might hear about strange animals - and that's because they're not animals:

  • Drahtesel (wire donkey) = bicycle
  • Wasserhahn (water rooster) = water tap
  • Spaßvogel (fun bird) = joker
  • Landratte (Land rat) = landlubber
  • Tischbock (table goat) = trestle
  • Pleitegeier (bankrupt vulture) = symbol for bankruptcy
  • Fleischwolf (meat wolf) = mincer
  • Leseratte (reading rat) = book lover
  • Schweinehund (pig dog) = the inner force that keeps you from doing sports

Enjoy our language!

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@jensclasen FWIW, an older English term for a tap is "cock", having the same meaning as "Hahn", and still used in e.g. "stopcock" (Absperrhahn).

A beer style question:

In Charlie Papazian's The Complete Joy of Home Brewing, he describes an Irish beer style, "Foreign (Export) Stout," with an ABV range of 5.7 to 9.3%. I'm used to seeing regular dry stouts (3.5 to 5% ABV) and imperial stouts (9 to 12% ABV) but not much in between. Are there any commercially-brewed "Foreign (Export) Stout"-style beers that are available in the western part of the USA? I'd like to try one and see if this might be the next style of beer I brew.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@wannabemystiker it packs quite the punch. It's a bit acidic, quite toasty, and I always get a hint of sour cherry. It's a very viscous beer, entirely different from the draught stout or even the bottled export stout.

akrennmair,
@akrennmair@mastodon.beer avatar

@wannabemystiker basically all the beers outside of Bavaria were top-fermented. So yes, lots of top-fermented beers in that book, the yeast strains are mostly guesses though as there were probably lots of yeast strains around that have simply been lost since then.

@sumisu3 White Labs is venturing into dry yeast now? Cool!

As for Mangrove Jack, I've not had much luck with their bottom-fermented yeast, on two occasions, the yeast just stopped working way too early, ending up with a poorly attenuated beer. I've heard similar stories from other German homebrewers. I hope the quality of their product is better in NZ.
