Remember that Decoction-mashed Bière de Garde Blonde with Cascade Hops I made back in January? It makes me sad to say this but I think I will pour it down the drain. We just had a glass and it was not great. It had a berry-fruityness and I wasn't sure whether the Nottingham yeast got too hot or the Cascade went wack-a-doodle. Too sweet, too sticky, very unpleasant. But eh, I have decided that if I ruin my liver with alcohol it has to be with stuff that I like so this goes down the drain tomorrow
This weekend I had a little beer tasting with my family and I told them what Gose is.
Today my mother texts me with a screenshot from some TV quiz show where the final question was "Where does the beer style of Gose originate from?" and she was all "I KNEW THE ANSWER AND THEY DIDN'T AND THEY LOST ALL THEIR MONEY!!!"
@brudibrau there's this hilarious little German poem that can be found in a few old beer/brewing books: "Es ist zwar ein sehr gutes Bier, die Goslarische Gose, doch wenn man meint, sie sei im Bauch, so liegt sie in der Hose."
I assume that's not the reason why they didn't like it.
So I had it. Good beer - very much unlike the standard "Vienna Malt".
It was rather bitter, slight lemon/pithy edge to the bitterness, not overly lingering malt flavour, but it had the usual slightly medicinal element that Czech Lagers have, likely because they didn't change from their house Yeast / brewing/lager process.
I was really surprised by the colour profile, when I read your book in ~2019. So it was great to finally see it and try it in person.
@kazaii oh wow, I just checked it out, and they seem to be using the Vienna malt that Sugar Creek and Goldfinger developed. Definitely sounds super interesting, so if you go there, please report what it‘s like.
I think the hardest part about introducing Universal Basic Income will be the decision on what dialect to use: Commodore BASIC? Atari BASIC? MSX? Or even VBA?
@brudibrau if you want to get really into details, ask which hop farm, then look up which breweries have contracts with them. Locher for example is where Brasserie de la Senne and Schönramer get some of their hops from. In any case, having a hookup like that is pretty amazing.
@sumisu3 yes! Specifically for me, it's also the type of beer that I cannot quite as easily get as German lagers. No point brewing them if I can buy great ones around the corner for €1 a bottle, but Czech beers (other than Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Staropramen in supermarkets; there's one bar serving Svijany and another one Vinohradsky here in Berlin) are pretty hard to get. So I need to brew that myself if I want to drink it, and I actually enjoy it.
