do you ever think about how most of k-12 schooling is training on test?

wow… $100,000/year college is right around the corner. CMU isn't quite there, and lots of students don't pay the full price… but $86k?

@jbigham In spring 1998, I remember looking at my college acceptances — Oregon State, UW, and expensive ivies — and then looking at my empty bank account. I barely managed to pay in-state tuition at OSU and left with $50K in debt, even after grants, scholarships, and 20 hours/wk of additional work. It was barely possible 26 years ago, and it's even less possible now.

I got an itty bitty electric bike-like thing called a Jackrabbit XG and it’s incredibly fun to ride, super light, and just a joy to navigate town on. I can’t wait to trick it out with stickers! https://jackrabbit.bike/products/jackrabbit-xg-white?variant=44510422007976

@andresmh It slows down on hills, but I can climb short 20% grades for a while before it stops. Anything else and it just slows down, but doesn’t stop.

It took me 16 years of faculty life to realize that me buying tissues for my office for crying students is basically the same as K-12 teachers buying school supplies for their classrooms.

i am now returning from an in-person workshop halfway around the world with great people. it was amazing. we should really make a grand challenge of HCI being to replicate this kind of experience virtually because nothing is anywhere in the ballpark now.

Can’t use the Vision Pro because I have a prescription with prisms. “Don’t worry, it’s only 1-2% of prescriptions” says the docs. Another platform, another capitalist rationale for ignoring the margins.

Those times as journal editor when a submission has 27 reviewer invites, 25 with no replies, and 2 declines, and you have to write the authors and say that it might have to be desk rejected after a year because no one will read it, or even reply to requests to read it. Sigh.

@andresmh I once did a round trip tour around Denmark in a car, starting in Copenhagen, and traced the protected bike lanes around the whole way around the island. Even the ferry had segregated bike lanes on both ends to connect the path! It was kind of incredible to see such a fully realized commitment to a nationwide network, like we do in the U.S. for cars. I also liked how there were bike lanes to places that cars couldn’t reach. It was such a direct statement of priorities.

i think university of chicago has it right with their policy of just not commenting as a university on stuff. whoever replaces gay will just be better practiced at saying nothing while still talking.

amyjko,
@amyjko@hci.social avatar

@jbigham universities should get out of the business of talking about stuff and get back to what matters: talking about non-stuff

I'm tired of writing about LLMs. But I'm more tired of watching education be duped by marketers. Here are my latest thoughts on generative AI and education. https://medium.com/bits-and-behavior/more-than-calculators-why-large-language-models-threaten-public-education-480dd5300939

why do all professors have a website generated by the university that is useless, but nevertheless ranked higher than their actual website which contains useful information?

amyjko,
@amyjko@hci.social avatar

@jbigham the answer is schemas, and also, did you know that most of academia doesn’t have websites? I was shocked when I stepped outside of computing how invisible most are on the web, aside from their university page and its 20 year old photo.

There’s a 50% chance that in less than 2 years, there will be national U.S. laws that police gender in schools, workplaces, and public spaces, limiting the freedom of everyone in the U.S. to exist. Not just trans people — everyone. What you wear, how you talk, where you go, what health care you have, who you can talk to.

If you don’t want that future, shake off any lingering complacency and start getting involved in local organizing. Because it’s going to take everything we have to stop it.

I rant a lot about peer review. Well now we have a team doing something about it. We're designing and building infrastructure to enable sustainable peer review. Follow along:
