Steel is Reel

analogfusion,

@skinnylatte I know it has advantages, but I'm too accustomed to my plastic reels now. The weird part is that I know I learned on steel way back in high school.

If you accept the evangelical preposition that a human life begins at conception;

And the evangelical preposition that a human that does not accept Christ is doomed to hell forever;

And the human body was perfectly designed by a higher creator;

And the observed scientific fact that roughly 25% of fertilized eggs fail to implant;

Then seemingly you exist in a nightmare reality in which an all powerful being seems to have built a wildly effective method for generating, harvesting and feeding souls directly to hell which; honestly kinda explains a LOT about most evangelicals I have met.

analogfusion,

@rgegriff That's about right for how evangelicals see things. It gets more complicated, though, when you bring Calvinism into it.

For the Calvinist / Reformed believer, only the elect - known from eternity by God - are predestined to come to saving faith in Christ. Those not predestined will never choose to accept Christ.

So a Calvinist might argue that 25% are all among the elect or all not the elect, depending on their particular theological commitments.

Have lived in Connecticut for almost 24 years. Still taken aback by the 169 towns (and jurisdictions) packed into this tiny area. Last week got Ellington and Enfield mixed up resulting in a 30 min longer drive. Today just realized East Hampton, which is just north of Haddam and East Haddam, is west and south, by some way, of Hampton. Not to be confused with Hamden, nowhere near. Also, make sure you know if you are going to Plainville or Plainfield (2/3 of the state apart).

analogfusion,

@IcooIey I grew up in Painfield, in the village of Meriden - New Hampshire, that is. I believe both were named after those places settled earlier in Connecticut.

Ship

There's a level on the Holga-120Pan. I didn't use it for this shot. Maybe I should have. Tri-X, Rodinal 1:50.

analogfusion,

@thereisnocat No, I think the ocean is always like that.

This barn only became visible when the trees obscuring it were cut down. The next time I drove by, it was gone - a bit of roadside Americana razed in an instant. It stood about 10 minutes from our house.

Taken with an Olympus Stylus Zoom, on Fuji Neopan 400 film (January 2017).

One thing I really wish mastodon had is location tags. I’m following a lot of nature and wildlife accounts and often have no clue where in the world photos were taken, even when I visit the poster’s profile.

analogfusion,

@catnip @Jaycee I generally use tags for photo locations, or include the info in the post itself. A lot of photographers seem to consider that unimportant or want to keep it secret for whatever reason. I’m pretty much obsessed with documenting details.

analogfusion,

@Jaycee @catnip Me? Spending too much time scrolling social media, and now getting ready to hit the hay. 🙂

Had a relaxing trip visiting nearby Cades Cove with the Mrs today. (Flagged sensitive for direct eye contact.)

analogfusion,

@jerzone That's a fascinating bit of industrial ruin. Do you know roughly how long ago it was in operation?

My grandparents were members of the Meriden Baptist church, which I believe was built sometime in the 19th century. I've read that the bricks used there were made from clay in nearby Blood's Brook. I don't know if there are any traces of that operation still in existence.

It was probably a small-scale operation, likely a one-off thing.

analogfusion,

@jerzone Thanks. I've bookmarked it to check out later!

Riding along the rail trail last week and ran across what looks like an old mill. Lots of quarried granite, wood structure that's melting back into the earth, and random bits of metal.
I ran across historical website a couple years ago and it was surprising how many area mills burned down. New mill, doing big business, employing many residents, tragic fire destroys it one night, too costly to rebuild. Some years later repeat. The mills that are still standing are all brick affairs, one of them still diverts water into a lower compartment to generate electricity.

another view from same spot, this time the stone structure is on the left and there’s like a long stone slab lined coridor paralleling the river/railway, but now trees have sprung up inside and around it.
Mostly abandoned wood and brick mill along the river, water pouring over dam face.
Well maintained occupied mill building, with a lot of different businesses inside (no milling). When I worked here years ago they generated electricity from hydro power, don’t know if they still do.

analogfusion,

@jerzone Really interesting ruins there. Knoxville has an urban wilderness called Ijams that is the site of a former quarry. It's a fun area to explore.

analogfusion,

@jerzone My mom's family lives in and around Claremont, which is an old mill town.

I know they've revitalized some of the old mill buildings there along the Sugar River - including one where The Common Man restaurant is.

This is from a shoot I did with local model, Ashley, in Vermont back in July 2014.

It was one of a handful of photos I took with my smartphone as a backup, just in case primary film shots didn't pan out.

Is it a sign of intelligence that I can usually tell when somebody is making a math or science joke, even though I don't know the specific thing being referenced?

I like to think so. 🤔

analogfusion,

@NuanceRhymesWithOrange That I am smart enough to understand. 😆

Been out all day so not had a chance to post any cat photos today (apologies). I did, however, get a new tattoo:

analogfusion,

@35millimetre Very cool. Does it have special significance to you?

analogfusion,

@35millimetre I like that! I have one tattoo of a camera, which is slightly less ancient in origin. 😆

analogfusion,

@35millimetre Mine has also faded, but here's a photo taken back when it was freshly done.

If the desperate shortage of cyber security talent gets any worse, we may yet find jobs for all the qualified people who can’t get hired

analogfusion,

@jerry Thanks for the encouraging word. I keep checking the job listings every day. There are many government contractors in this area, so hopefully something will turn up soon!
