wow… $100,000/year college is right around the corner. CMU isn't quite there, and lots of students don't pay the full price… but $86k?

@jbigham If I were in the US and about to go to college now, I would seriously consider going abroad.

I had an American friend in college who transferred to our school in Mexico. I thought it was a mistake. Everyone’s dream was to go to college in the US! But now, I think it was a smart choice.

He lived very comfortably in Mexico and even went to a study abroad program in France. He’s now an engineering manager at a FAANG in California.

@marielgm i searched for the hashtag a few min later and found lots of reports, so the data might be there just the annoyance of adding the # makes it less intuitive

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@marielgm yeah i go back and forth on the value vs harm of centralized search. 99% time is harmful, 1% time is helpful? I think someone could build a centralized search and trending topic detection for the fediverse, but people would probably not like that.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@marcua @marielgm good question. I could see the argument of being ok to do event detection relying on instance opt-in. In fact, I think the current "trending now" section does not even have any sort of opt-in.

Searching might be problematic, but event detection seems less so!

Just attempted to use VoiceOver (Mac screen reader) with Overleaf and wow, navigating is nearly impossible. At least the text editor control works.

we might have been spoiled in computing with how 'easy' it is to submit papers ... i'm trying to submit a 'real science' journal paper now and there are like a bazillion weird steps involved, and then if it gets published i have to pay like $500000 or whatever

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@pg there should be a metric that include visibility (v), reputation (r), cost per published word (c)

v*r/c

where cost = f(time spent, budget to run the research. the actual cost of publishing the paper)

i wonder how a social media post would compare with a Nature paper

jbigham, to random
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

these days Google Scholar usually knows about my publications having been made publicly available before I do, and so I just update the list of publications on my web page based on it.

I think back in the day, I would post papers on my web page because it would take too long for them to appear on the official sites, and they'd be paywalled and hard to access there.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jbigham the most surprising gscholar updates for me are patents. For some reason my previous employer decided to submit over 50 of those in recent months and it feels like my gscholar is being spammed. Also all of them are in all UPPER CASE so it’s even more jarring.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jbigham I manually edited the ones that are in lowercase, but I gave up part way through. One of those tasks for a long weekend 😂

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jbigham I'm tempted to delete them. TBH, I'm a bit cynical about the patent system and not super happy about having been part of that 😬

Until the fediverse (Mastodon in particular) comes up with a workable "Share to Mastodon" (or the like) button like the ubiquitous Twitter, Facebook, etc. buttons, this place will be lacking a vital capability.

Update: The comments below indicate that there's a lot of progress in this area already.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@dangillmor i'm skeptical on how useful those buttons are. I think their main value is to track web traffic, akin to the magic pixel

We enjoyed having @toby come to give the William Field Pierson Lecture at @hci yesterday.

Their lab is building some fascinating tools to empower gig workers to "fight fire with fire." For example, a neat mobile-based screen scraper ingests data unavailable through Uber/Lyft APIs to help them advocate for themselves.

Follow their work!

attn @andresmh and other hci.social decision-makers (and just posting this here b/c I'm curious what other instances do): Is it possible to get a reason for requests to review follow requests manually? Like it would be helpful to know if it's that the whole instance is problematic (and ideally why) or if it's the individual that's problematic (and ideally why).

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@cfiesler, most likely, the reason is that the instance in question was added to one of the 'blocklists' we use. Unfortunately, Mastodon does not seem to have an easy way to show the rationale to the end user. Maybe it's by design so the instances in the blocklists do not get too agitated and retaliate?

Funny you ask about this because we have a student considering doing his MS thesis developing a more transparent process for labeling instances. Also, @iftas is working on related things.

I just enabled sharing to the fediverse on my Threads account.

I might regret saying this but I think this is a net gain for the fediverse, even if Meta is doing this to potentially appease regulators.

I’ll continue to use the Mastodon instances I helped start (hci.social and micro.blogs.pricneton.edu) but it’s nice to follow Threads folks from afar👋

Video one enabling fediverse sharing

andresmh, (edited )
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@tod, it seems too risky for Meta to allow Threads users to see replies from other instances because they cannot moderate content. I think the only way they might be willing to do it is if Threads has an allowlist of fediverse accounts their users pre-emptively approves interactions from. I'm very skeptical that Meta will do that.
