This coming Sunday, Mexico will have its first woman President -- a huge deal in a country where many women alive today were born without voting rights.

I think of my grandmother who is no longer around to witness it. She was the one who took me to political rallies and who made me run on my first and only ballot (for participatory budgeting, our neighbor group lost, lol).

What counts as knowledge in AI ethics? Whose labor and experience does this legitimize?

Walter Shapiro reflects on his decision in 1968 to vote third-party rather than to vote for Hubert Humphrey. This was, he now sees, a "self-righteous decision to opt out of the two-party system" he made "out of misplaced antiwar passions."

And, of course, his third-party protest vote enabled tricky Dick Nixon, a warmonger if there ever was a warmonger, to gain the White House.

I am curious if the "announcment" feature Mastodon admins have access to is actually useful.

I suspect many people never see them. I think I've only ever seen it displayed in the "official" mastodon web UI. And never in any of the (many) apps I use.

Feel free to boost for reach.

A heartbreaking moment that was saved by an SS photographer at Auschwitz II-Birkenau during the deportations of Hungarian Jews. It was taken 80 years ago, most likely in late May 1944. A little child finds a dandelion in the grass and is handing it or showing it to an older boy.

Know any NYC students, or their parents?

The mayor closed the libraries on Sundays, and is set to close them Saturdays too -- citing budget constraints 📚

The budget's being debated right now!

So, if you live in NYC?

Here's a form that'll auto-send a letter to your city councillor telling them to vote to "keep the libraries open sundays": https://actionnetwork.org/letters/open-the-libraries-nyc/

Forward it to any students in NYC 🤘

Parents can use it too -- just rewrite the opening salutation to say "I'm a parent"

There's a crisis in Mexico, but most MSM journalists haven't covered it, or the reason for the suffering, :

MX’s drought, heatwave & water shortages have gotten so bad that even police blocked traffic in protest Wed. In recent months, residents of some MX City neighborhoods have regularly taken to forming human chains to block boulevards to demand water. In Apr, complaints about contaminated water sparked a weeks-long crisis in one upscale neighborhood.
