there sure have been a lot of armchair constitutional law scholars out here recently; how weird that my takes are in line with actual experts and not random people in social media comments :) https://www.npr.org/2024/05/14/1251086753/tiktok-ban-first-amendment-lawsuit-free-speech-project-texas

@rosanita hahaha I know right, I wasted so much money going to law school

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

I've also been wondering lately if I will be more tolerant of random internet strangers explaining the law to me once I'm done paying off my student loans and don't have a painful monthly reminder of my decision to go to law school. :)

Benedictine College should refund the tuition of every woman graduate who had to listen to the commencement speaker say that her degree is worthless.

I’m taking a break from creating video content while I finish revising my novel (replacing one type of not-work productivity time with another) and am struck by how nice it is to not have to think at all about what my hair looks like on any given day haha.

PSA: I will not be at CHI next week. :)

Not feeling obligated to go to an expensive, far-away conference is a sabbatical gift to myself haha.

There is some amazing grassroots organizing around crowdfunding to help people being forced to leave Gaza with the incredible cost of doing so - but of course, one thing that's happened is that scammers have been taking advantage. 😡 Operation Olive Branch, that is mentioned in this article, has been collecting and vetting crowdfunding campaigns to help with that issue. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/gaza-residents-crowdfunding-egypt-escape-israel-hamas-war-rcna145467

And meanwhile, I’m sure the government is going to be insisting that the decision to target TikTok was entirely content neutral (and therefore not subject to strict scrutiny in a first amendment challenge). https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/05/06/senator-romney-antony-blinken-tiktok-ban-israel-palestinian-content

I was supposed to be writing all day today but then the tiktok lawsuit dropped and I had to read the whole thing and then like remind myself what bill of attainder is. 😭

Yesterday I played Wavelength with some law profs and "net neutrality" was a clue more than once. 🤣 (One was from me, I used it for "stable" to "unstable.")

(Brief explanation for Wavelength is that you're given a position on a spectrum of X to Y, and then you choose something that would fit at that position and someone else has to guess what position on the spectrum, from that clue.)

The first time I applied for PhD programs, I was rejected from every single one. It’s tough! If you weren’t successful this year it’s a good time to take stock and decide what to do next. There’s a chance your application is just fine and it was just bad luck! Or that there are some things you can do to improve it for another go or to apply differently. I’m sorry 😢but here’s my advice: https://youtu.be/0zf9LVNipQ0

Also if you don't want to watch a 15 minute video of PhD rejection advice, here's the 60 second version I literally just made: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hzYqCW8JeKw

@drgroftehauge You mean to US schools? There are application fees for both domestic and international students typically, yes.

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

@dan613 Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking! What do you mean by works best?

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

@dan613 Oh, probably TikTok on all metrics then. Instagram is all re-posts of my TikTok content, and I post to YouTube shorts maybe twice a year.

Today is Black Mirror Writers Room day in my graduate Data Ethics class, and it is gonna be so much fun.

(h/t @cfiesler and her overview here: https://medium.com/cuinfoscience/the-black-mirror-writers-room-the-case-and-caution-for-ethical-speculation-in-cs-education-5c81d05d2c67)

The spreadsheet of AI ethics news isn't a research project and the categorization scheme is definitely flawed/not rigorous, but some obvious emergent categories finally bugged me enough that I did some re-mapping, especially out of the miscellaneous category. So the three new categories are Militarization, Sustainability, and Abuse. The last is essentially sexual abuse, e.g. nonconsensual intimate deepfakes and also child exploitation. I hope this continues to be useful! http://bit.ly/ai-ethics-news

Law peeps again: I'm hearing that TikTok itself plans to sue on free speech grounds. Can someone explain to me how they would have standing? This is not my area of expertise, but I was expecting there to be 1A lawsuits with TikTok users as plaintiffs, and then TikTok itself suing on different (economic?) grounds.

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

@jtlg Ahhhhh okay yes, that makes sense, thank you! In your opinion, would it be a better strategy though for there to be users as plaintiffs? (Or maybe we're just going to see both.)

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

@jtlg this tiktok thing will be an interesting addition to your casebook!
