I think the lack of a good screenshot utility is what's going to get me to leave behind. The default one is not great, and none of the others that work on Wayland work for me on Gnome. Get the same errors with grim/slurp and flameshot.

Heh, I updated to Ubuntu 24.04 and gnome is not pleased about it 😅

i3 looks fine, but Regolith and vanilla GNOME are both borked. That feels like something funky specific to GNOME font handling maybe? But initial troubleshooting steps like tweaking/resetting font choices or refreshing font cache got me nowhere. I'll have to revisit this, but if anybody has ideas I'm all ears.

Impressionnant.

Markdown is great and is made even greater by a sleek editor like Apostrophe! Take notes and create documents with this distraction-free app. The program's special "Focus Mode" lets you start writing your next masterpiece one line at a time. It also supports all markdown syntax, with options to quickly add a placeholder link or table. Preview your rendered work, then export to a variety of formats!

You can get the app on Flathub here: https://flathub.org/apps/org.gnome.gitlab.somas.Apostrophe

Disappointed to see pages given to in-person events and financial reporting in the latest GNOME Foundation report, but not a single mention of environmental reporting or the work multiple people have done to allow remote participation in GNOME events.

This stuff is important. We cannot keep doing business as usual and ignoring the emissions elephant in the room.

Why is it so hard in and with to show thumbnails of the screenshots I made, so I know which image to select without painstakingly opening them one by one from separate file window?

There's many images in my screenshot dir, all having thumbnails, except those created in the last 5 days. Why no thumbnails here? Why?

I see phoronix has posted some article about Foundation finances and the usual haters are out mocking our ED, and just generally be repellent as humans.

The GF's job is to spend money and if we're spending it on infrastructure and conferences - that is exactly what they should be doing. But what's good is that GF funds were up in 2023 - so we're actually gaining more funds even though our expenditure is about the same. Good stuff.

Some app developers complain about getting in their issue trackers, issues specific to a distro, or a distro packaging issue.

But several distros have their own bug trackers for package issues. Some like debian recommend to report to the distro first.

Makes me think that maybe software stores like software could indicate in the application issues section something like:

This application is provided via your distro's repositories. Report any issues to distro bug tracker first.

maryjane,
@maryjane@coletivos.org avatar

Currently software uses the appstream info to indicate where to report issues.
But that always points to the upstream repo.

So the signal given is to always report upstream regardless of the package being distributed, via distro repos or flatpak or snap.

So it only makes the situation of app devs that do not want to get reports about distro specific issues only worse. IMO

I have a huge amount of appreciation for the fact that Nautilus / can seamlessly pattern-select, batch-rename and move files both from its treeview and from search results… all with keyboard shortcuts! Extremely useful to clean up filenames.

Today, in someone else's messy folders, I was able to cleanly rename everything and eliminate at least 40 duplicates in a directory that contained over 180 files, most of which were in the wrong locations.

Shoutout to Fina Wilke's Warp! Such a nice, self-contained way to just send stuff between devices. Works like a charm for both my 5GB music folder and that Markdown document I wanted to bring with me on my laptop to do some editing while away from my room. Take it for a spin and experience the magic for yourself!

On 11, the whole system along with was taking 500 MB of RAM. On Debian 12, the system takes 850 MB of RAM. On Trixie/Sid-unstable, it takes 1.3 GB. I honestly don't know what they're shoving in it.

With and , it takes 1.6 GB on idle. Since when Cinnamon, a gnome2/gtk3 fork takes (or should take) as much RAM as Gnome4/gtk4? Something's amiss.

Par defaut, la couleur de l'onglet ne bouge pas, qu'il y ait de l'activité ou pas.
Un peu chiant pour suivre si un script a fini ou pas tout en faisant autre chose sur un autre onglet
