Servers which "limit" Fedi servers are really fucking annoying. Thanks for not letting me interact with people whose posts show up in my timeline.

I wish I could conveniently import a blocklist which blocks every server which does this.

anji,
@anji@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland I ran my own server for a while and Mastodon.social was one of the least troublesome ones, as it is very actively moderated. I got most of the spam from all the small unattended servers.

anji,
@anji@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland People just have a stick up their butt about Mastodon.social sometimes, for various reasons.

Understandable perhaps but limiting is just a really annoying measure.

anji,
@anji@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland Because I like to interact with my timeline but then I find out my reply never reaches them because I'm on the uncool large instance. I might as well block those instances so I don't waste my time again. I'm not happy about it but it's where we are.

Imagine people running their own email servers "limiting" Gmail.

anji,
@anji@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland I could move instances to a cool smaller instance but I don't particularly want to be forced to it because of other's weird attitudes. I am so far quite content with mastodon.social's moderation, service, uptime, etc.

anji,
@anji@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland Alright I'm considering another instance. Look what you made me do! :jeb:

    I have a question for the MacBook enjoyers:

    I have had a base model M1 Air ever since it came out. It’s been great, but the battery is pretty bad at the moment (around 77% at best). Also, because it’s only the 8GB model, I’m starting to notice some slowdowns.

    Do you think it would be worth it to invest in the new M3 Air? I’m planning to get the 16 or 24GB model this time.

    I don’t want a Pro because it’s too big, and refurbished isn’t an option either (no refurbished store).

    anji,
    @anji@mastodon.social avatar

    @davidbures Dunno about the M3, but I have an M2 Air and while it's great I kinda regret not getting a Pro. The difference between the Air and the Pro in weight and size isn't as significant in this generation.

    anji,
    @anji@mastodon.social avatar

    @davidbures Yeah that's real expensive. Base Air is ~$1200 here after tax.

    2000 pages into Churchill's "The Second World War" I'm surprisingly still engaged and actively reading. 3 books left.

    Besides the man's many historic accomplishments, and faults, he was a very good writer.

    Here one can feel his antipathy:

    “Thereafter mighty forces were adrift; the void was open, and into that void after a pause there strode a maniac of ferocious genius, the repository and expression of the most virulent hatreds that have ever corroded the human breast – Corporal Hitler.”

    anji,
    @anji@mastodon.social avatar

    During the Blitz, where London was bombed daily: "Indeed, many persons seemed envious of London’s distinction, and quite a number came up from the country in order to spend a night or two in town, share the risk, and 'see the fun'. We had to check this tendency for administrative reasons."

    Humans. Typical.

    So I know you’ve all seen that “tired Oompa-Loompa” photo from that disaster. Please know that there is a human being behind that meme, and she is not enjoying the attention.

    These are actors, and they showed up for a job. They got screwed along with the ticket-buyers.

    I’m surprisingly unable to find much data about the cost of bounds checking in real-world high performance applications like games.

    Did you ever perform or find a representative study @repi ? Or anyone using @bevy ?

    Intuitively I expect modern CPUs to hardly break a sweat about all these untaken branches, but I have no data. I’m left wondering if gamedevs would not rather skip all bounds checks in release builds 🤔
