Remember Collada? Yeah the format is pretty much dead at this point, but Blender still has it (because of Sketchup, Chief Architect, Bricklink Studio etc.). However it felt increasingly uncomfortable to continue using OpenCollada (that embeds old 3rd party libraries with several dozen known security issues). So here's a "cleanup fork" of OpenCollada that gets rid of the security issues part (but also gets rid of everything Blender does not need). https://github.com/aras-p/OpenCOLLADA

@Drwave it is really strange that an official Khronos project keeps on embedding 3rd party libraries from year 2008. Would be fine if said libs would not have 18 critical, 42 high, 43 medium CVEs 🤯

@dotstdy yeah, most robust interop is copying things from the other computer memory directly. Checks out!

@kwramm it is being marked as “legacy” starting with blender 4.2

I wrote a post I could link/refer folks to that periodically ask me "how to get into computer graphics": https://www.jeremyong.com/graphics/2024/05/19/getting-started-in-computer-graphics/

@ninepoints great post, thanks!

@BartWronski @ninepoints probably different kinds of “learning approaches”. I’ve seen both kinds - where they prefer to start high level and dig deeper if/when needed. I’ve seen others who are paralyzed by high level overview and can’t progress unless they understand everything. For them starting with tiny, but low level, things is better and gradually build up larger understanding from small pieces.

Because no one stopped me, I ported "Everybody Wants to Crank the World" demo to PC (Windows/Mac). https://github.com/aras-p/demo-pd-cranktheworld/pull/1 :playdate: :demoscene:

Using Sokol libraries by @floooh to do most of heavy lifting.

Fun fact: while the demo is running, it takes up as much CPU time as the windows task manager on my PC.

@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

...aaand @floooh just contributed Linux support (really just a version of the shader for OpenGL, everything else already taken care of by Sokol). https://github.com/aras-p/demo-pd-cranktheworld

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@wolfpld @floooh windows task manager! ;)

@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

...and now @floooh made a web "port" of the demo o_O since Sokol makes it pretty easy.

PR: https://github.com/aras-p/demo-pd-cranktheworld/pull/6
Web build: https://aras-p.github.io/demo-pd-cranktheworld/

@scoopr @floooh @zeux yeah for me on iOS it also works, but have to turn off silent mode

@floooh@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aras ...got the demo working on the web \o/

I'm not actually not sure yet why it doesn't start until clicked or tapped :D

It could be related to the WebAudio context not allowed to play until resumed, but I haven't seen yet that this "freezes" the entire app. At least this means that the audio and graphics are in sync.

I'll see if I can add a text message to "tap or click to start" or smth, then I'll prepare a PR.

@floooh @WAHa_06x36 indeed, exactly that. everything in the demo is driven by audio playback timer.

One of my favorite things for art to do is take a concept that is patently ridiculous but then commit so hard and execute so well you are forced to meet it on its own terms.

Anyway the Muse song "Knights of Cydonia" and the accompanying music video are like close to 18 years old now and they're still awesome

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@rygorous Yes. Also I had thought about this song just a few days ago, when I found that my cydonias (quinces) are blooming.

Oh no, it seems like VS 2022 no longer opens FBX files (VS2019 did)... Never thought I'd be sad about that, but it was handy

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@msinilo does it also no longer have a graphical shader editor, where you could orbit around your node graph in 3D space?

You probably all already know this, but since I only got around to installing it relatively recently - I’m slow to take on new sw, maybe you too - PowerToys is fantastic & everyone on Win should use it. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/#current-powertoy-utilities

All those QoL things you wish Windows had are here; window layouting, easy access to accented characters like macOS, file quick look like macOS, Alt+Space quick launch like ma…

Look it takes a lot of stuff from macOS before Apple became like they are now. This is good

@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@bitinn @sinbad let's make file_id.diz a thing again :P
