I don't always think about ancient Rome, but when I do, I think about how chariot racing was vastly more popular than gladiators, to the point that mobs wearing the colour of their preferred stables had riotous brawls, politicians were heavily involved, and more.

Roman sports hooligans were chariot fans.

artikid,
@artikid@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I actually ran a game of Runequest set in fanta-historical Byzantium where the PCs had been hired to fix the races by intimidating one of the charioteers... which didn't feel intimidated at all and had the players beset by violently loyal fans. As chariot races are deeply political, it all ended up with the PCs turning against their patron and one of them winning the race with the help of the party sorcerer. They had to flee both stadium and city as the riots started.

    @LeviKornelsen I think so? I remember reading something about the effects of the introduction of horses in India and how this affected all of the sub-continent. I think it was Romila Thapar's History of early India.

    Some of you have likely never experienced the purest, truest forms of "RPG as physics engine", like people actually shooting various things to see if the weapon penetration tables are good.

    If you want to bake your noodle, go get the BIG version of GURPS Gulliver for 3rd edition, and enter the world of "Throwing distance modifiers by arm length? Fucking WHAT?"

    ...

    artikid,
    @artikid@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen I never bought the idea of RPGs as "physics engine". Either as a criticism or as a selling point. I think RPGs are at best a Realist or Hyper-Realist art fprm.

    @LeviKornelsen the Stormbringer Conpanion had a solo-adventure.
    ICE produced Middle Earth CYOA books you could play with MERP or their own rules.
    The Lone Wolf RPGs used a system derived from the gamebooks.
    As a side note: my cousin used the dungeon generation rules in the DMG to play solo AD&D 1e

    Recently retrieved from a giveaway pile, it's possible that free was still too high a price for me to pay. Amazing Engine is a weak RPG system backed by sparse worldbooks, only notable as an artifact of late-stage TSR's flailing attempts to grasp after its diminishing audience. As failures go, I'm not even sure it's an interesting one.

    @SJohnRoss @E_T_Smith @Mark_Krawec @peteramthor MTG reached Italy by the time of Revised edition (1995?1996?) and I got in it myself, as one of the early adopters. Before the year had ended a streetful of kids where camped day-long in front of the FLGS (of ALL gameshops, actually) playing MTG on parked cars with "Don't play Magic on my car" signs. It wa like looking at an alternate reality.
    (But, damn I didn't get to buy used rpgs cheap )

    @SJohnRoss @Mark_Krawec @E_T_Smith @peteramthor Masterbook... that's TORG, right? I kinda liked it back in the day. I think it was a lot better than other games with a similar idea (Yes Rifts, I'm looking at you). Probably too much crunch for the current me.

    @LeviKornelsen going through Sargolis I noticed that some NPCs have the Equipment feature, sometimes even giving specific equipment, yet no mechanical effect is given for that. I assume it's a shorthand for "you can loot this NPC".
    And btw, connecting to your recent blogposts, I think Sargolis is an excellent example of how Old-School D&D should be run. You really captured that feeling.

    @LeviKornelsen shrug I was a paid GM in the 90s at a local gameclub at the request of friends running the club, and national D&D tournaments (rpg tournaments, another interesting topic).
    I can definitely say it felt 'wrong' to me, and I've never done it again, but I'm not going to frown on how people chose to handle their gaming and gaming relationships.

    Rereading the Principia Apocrypha; still loving it as a model of OSR GMing:

    https://lithyscaphe.blogspot.com/p/principia-apocrypha.html

    artikid, (edited )
    @artikid@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen a few weeks ago we were debating with a handful of friends in the italian OSR if and how the PA needed updating.
    Some us feel like it doesn't reflect anymore most of the games played in the OSR as in the meantime it has moved away from OS-D&D quite a lot.
    While I can share the sentiment, to a degree, I feel that the PA is just so concise and well enunciated that I would be at loss where to start if I wanted to revise it.

    artikid,
    @artikid@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen which made me think that if the Principia could only have been written playing old school D&D (or Classic Traveller, maybe), ITO is the game that -still- most precisely incarnates them (although it was created before and by a different author)

    Check my maths:

    Layoffs are often an indicator that not-very-competent people are in charge, and generally include clearing out their critics; this allows the not-so-competent to do more of their particular brand of sub-par bullshit.

    For Wizards, that bullshit is anti-customer cash grabbing.

    So, we can very likely anticipate more of that from Hasbro next year.

    Yeah?

    artikid,
    @artikid@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen my guess is that what we are seeing is the next step of the techbro cashgrab.
    Last year when the OGL thing blew up, it was because of the techbro's monetization process, this is just more of the same.
    It probably had less resonance so far because peoole who could care have already stopped caring (and sharing their outrage)

    Also also:

    TTRPGs are the foundation of many hobbies, and "Fixing D&D" is one of those hobbies.

    And I'm not joking. This is literally a specific activity from which people derive joy; many of them know about other systems, and are doing something they LIKE.

    "Why do you like restoring old tractors? They're not even good at the job!"
