Me, a month ago: I need a new coffee machine, not a new hobby.

Me now: spends hours a week watching YouTube videos about espresso

asendra,

@simonbs @kylebshr Ascaso Steel Duo + Timemore Sculpture 078S user here 👋

asendra,

@simonbs it’s been great! I was between this and the Rocket Apartamento and no regrets. It was quite an upgrade from my DeLonghi Dedica. But the actual money drain and what makes a difference is good coffe! 😂

asendra,

@simonbs well in my case the decision was made for me when someone local sold it to me quite a bit cheaper (his wife was not happy with it!)
But definitely aesthetics and fast heat up times where the main things that drew me to it 😁

I am hiring a staff engineer and tech lead for the UI Systems iOS team at Square. We build and maintain Square’s design system.

If this sounds interesting, you can apply here!

https://jobs.smartrecruiters.com/Square/743999979471083-staff-ios-engineer-ui-systems

asendra,

@kyleve I wish Square started to open up tech positions to people in Europe. At least for internal mobility candidates! 😅

asendra,

@rafa don’t want to bring up bad memories but did you manage to resolve satisfactorily the thing with VanMoof?

asendra,

@_inside they must not be using www.emergetools.com 🙃

Writing widgets with a 30MB memory limit on iOS is actually kinda fun. It really forces you to architect your allocations, dependencies, and slim binary / asset sizes.

In the same light, writing widgets with a 30MB limit also is zero fun when you go over the limit and you can't attach or profile the process (as the OS kills it) 🥲

I ended up aggressively setting breakpoints everywhere and watching the memory consumption graph in Xcode (and used some tips from @christianselig, thank you!!).

asendra,

@b3ll @christianselig wouldn’t it make more sense if the limit was higher for development purposes with clear warnings?

My Google-fu and Apple Documentation-fu are both failing me so I’m turning to the Mastodon-brain 🧠

Have Apple published the APIs for third-parties to integrate with the Journal app?

asendra,

@simonbs read-only afaik

Now that I’ve recovered from six hours of sleep in 36 hours and a red eye, let me tell you about Paris. It's my favorite place to visit in the world, with the most beautiful architecture, the most delicious croissants, the best desserts, but this time we came for a good friend’s wedding and there truly was so much love in the air that night. 🥲🥲🥲

    asendra,

@mergesort ha, the other day I was chatting with a ~coworker at Square who was also in Paris for a weeding this weekend.
What a great excuse to make the oversea trip 😁🤩

    asendra,

    @mergesort @zadr small world!

I’m about to move to a place with a lot of carpet and I’m looking at the Roombas on sale today.

Anyone have experience here? What’s worth paying for?

Help me avoid making a bad decision 🙏

    asendra,

@matthewcassinelli unsolicited opinion, but after 4-5y of personal experience, 1 Dyson > 3 Roombas

Travel experts of Mastodon, I need advice. I'll be traveling without checked luggage, but I may bring back liquids that cannot be carried in cabin luggage. What is the easiest and/or cheapest small piece of luggage that I can check in when I didn't bring checked-in luggage when flying out?

    asendra,

@simonbs the best option is to buy it at the duty free in the airport, no need to check it in, if that is possible for your items.

Since moving to Xcode 15 our unit tests have started running incredibly slow. After picking a simulator, xcodebuild hangs for 13 minutes before running the test.

Other times xcodebuild fails with an error sayig ”Unable to connect to co com.apple.instruments.deviceservice.lockdown - timed out after 120 seconds”.

    Anyone seeing something similar?

    asendra,

@simonbs we have sometimes have timeout issues when not specifying clearly enough a target destination, making xcodebuild to decide on one. Not sure why…

I’m looking for some advice on how to upgrade my TV audio setup:

I currently have a #Sonos Beam (Gen 1), what you would do?

    asendra,

@rafa same situation and I added a Sub Mini. Next would be the surround Eras 100.
Unless you have a huge room or live in a house and not an apartment, I would not go for the arc + sub upgrade.

Can anyone recommend an app for tracking body measurements (waist circumference, thigh circumference, ...)? I'd like an app that only tracks body measurements and not weight, food etc.

I'm looking for something like @rooster's Happy Scale app but for body measurements.

    asendra,

@simonbs @rooster I’ve used Progress on and off for a long time. It gets the job done, but I’ll be checking the replies too https://apps.apple.com/es/app/progress-body-tracker-health/id583840813

Hearing several indie developers say they aren’t betting on the Vision Pro at launch. On one hand that makes me concerned that I’m making a poor bet. On the other hand, that means fewer apps to compete with during the initial gold rush 😄

    asendra,

@simonbs I wish you luck but I can’t see how the numbers will be there for at least 1y or even more given the price and how little units they are going to produce.
Unless you have a very good, original idea for showcasing the hardware I think it’s a distraction.

There's been notably less technical writing in the iOS community over the last couple of years, and at times I miss it. I think a part of it is that there isn't as much incentive to publish as there once was, but one positive reason is that I think a part of it is Apple’s improved documentation.

    asendra,

@mergesort I’ve noticed that iOS conferences have in general less technical content also.

I don’t want to exaggerate but if I left Italy without having a cannoli I was going to die.

    asendra,

@mergesort the one at Roma termini (Mercato Centrale) was the best one I tried. But all were good. I still prefer a good Tiramisù though 😋

Which new API or change to an existing API has you the most excited this year?

    asendra,

@simonbs for us I think It’s Interactive widgets and “Integrate your media app with HomePod” https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2023/10104/

Finally, we don’t need to beg Apple anymore for this.

Is anyone else a little weirded out that the richest company in the world is trying to sell us tools to fix mental health? I know the system is failing everyone and I'm not opposed to using technology to improve people's lives, but it still feels a bit dystopian.

@mergesort specially one that sells things not easily affordable by mosts
