On aphantasia:

“I dream, but not in pictures”

“I can write entire articles, documents, or conference talks in my head while out for a run. It’s usually quicker for me to create content in this way than sit at a computer and think about it. I can come in from a run and type out 2,000 words, transferring what I’ve written in my head to the document.”

First time I’ve heard how I experience the world described in words! Also why I take photos.

@skinnylatte That… sounds like some kind of alien intelligence to me. It’s like landing on a different planet with a highly advanced civilization and learn that the way they think is different.

Yes there will be AI features and all that, but all I want for iOS is a smarter screen orientation for the iPhone i.e. stay in portrait mode most of the time but switch to landscape mode automatically when playing videos that are meant to be viewed that way.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@irfan Yeah, I’m sure Apple prefers everyone to just buy a car with CarPlay support for the ecosystem lock in but the reality is most ppl can’t really choose a car with CarPlay, and the driving focus mode doesn’t even allow us to create its own Home Screen layout.

All things considered the Type C racial slur debacle ended up being a very wholesome incident as most Malays quickly condemned the parties involved, most Chinese weren’t offended at all (at least among my own circles) and there’s a lot of self-reflection on our end along the lines of “many of our own racial slurs are even worse, so let’s all be better”. All while the minister of national unity was sleeping. Maybe there’s hope for this nation after all.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@irfan I’ve seen photos of usb c cables plugged into smartphones with Chinese captions along the lines of “Malaysian Chinese amateur uncensored” lol.

rakyat,

@geraineon Some local fried chicken chain which markets itself as Muslim bumiputera only tried to blame malicious slander from “type c” (slur for cina) when questioned about its expensive prices and ended up getting lambasted by Malays in general while most Chinese were more amused than offended.

To all the Apple fans watching the event at Battersea Power Station, did you know that the mall is owned by Malaysians & partially owned by all Malaysian employees through our Employees Provident Fund?

@irfan Yeah the apple event. Ok i just looked it up, apparently the event was streamed online but they have a press event where invited ppl watch the event at Battersea.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@irfan Yeah I was confused for a moment. I think the event at Battersea was for media/KOLs to check out the new products after watching the streamed video.

Currently imagining the chaos that would ensue in this community if the new iPad Pro is the same as the last 3 models but with OLED 🙈

@matt I'll be very happy as I just got mine last year! But to be honest I don’t see how they can tempt me to upgrade with hardware improvements.

When I’m browsing artist's bios, I see a lot, but there's still a lot number with . It's been an exhausting couple of years, huh?

On the other hand, NFTs turned out to be a bunch of nothing in the end, and I feel like just ignoring the whole thing would have worked.

I feel like maybe this is true of AI ‘art’. It's boring. It doesn't even need a backlash.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@john It mostly just replaced stock images. And when people see AI images, they have the exact same emotional reaction as seeing stock images.

The general sentiment on my Chinese-speaking circles is that “type c” is such a lame slur that it’s more funny than offensive.

Many even are owning the type c label now as they find it quite cool

“iPhone 受” doesn’t sound quite right in Chinese tbh, but also, the existence of iPhone 受 (bottom/M) strongly implies the existence of iPhone 攻 (top/S).

@geraineon What’s a man-in-phone?

rakyat,

@geraineon Reminds me of when recently I saw someone mention a porn he’s encountered where the guy became a cockroach and flew inside the lady’s bathroom. I asked about what happened after that but he couldn’t offer any more details

@geraineon Maybe some people have a fetish for being crushed under pretty feet? (Tarantino might enjoy that!)

Usually moths are seen as reincarnation of grandparents or ancestors haha

@geraineon (Now thinking of that super awkward grandfather/granddaughter reunion as the moth takes its true form)

(But if I’m to return as a moth I hope I look like this)

Lowyat.net may be old and creaky but it still beats Reddit when it comes to searching for Malaysian knowledge on all kinds of niche topics.

Life as a consumer in Malaysia is easy: see "Produk Melayu" or "Produk Buatan Muslim" and the like -> don't fucking buy.

Otherwise if it has no stupid mentions of race or religion, and if it's a good or safe product for you (i.e. for consumption) then please buy all you want. If it's a local product, I say that's better.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@irfan Products that use race and religion as a selling point always mean that they have no other redeeming qualities to speak of lol

@irfan There’s a couple of or a few Sugarbun branches in KL which is another great local fast food chain. I heard that LFC is also decent but I’ve never tried it.

I started going to Richiamo Coffee branches some time ago because it’s cheap and local but then saw nationalists posting “boycott Starbucks AND Zus because they have chinese bosses and choose Richiamo because it’s bumi business” which certainly left a bit of a sour taste, though I don’t think Richiamo is behind it.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@irfan Sugarbun is apparently beloved in Sarawak and my office occasionally uses one of the KL branch for catering, their flavored rice and fried chicken are good. Richiamo has a few branches here in Kajang/Bangi area. Nowadays I often go Chagee or similar China chains because I do like their drinks, but not all branches provide WiFi. If you just want to grab and go, Kee Nguyen is nice wherever they are available!

Will be eternally tickled that Malaysians are called 大马人 (big horse people). 🐎

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai @trollball Apparently it’s because of Sabah/Sarawak and (at that time) Singapore joining the federation. So East Malaysia + West Malaysia = Pan(Big) Malaysia

However only people in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong uses 大马. People in Mainland China uses 马来, which can easily be confused with “Malay”.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai Some people joke that it’s because China folks unwilling to make it sound like we are bigger than them haha.
