Got word from my landlord that the is a bit high, so I just bought a to place here in my office to see what the usage of the and such is, and if it's high then I'm going to look into making a new with lower wattage computers.

Coming from where the electricity is so cheap it messes a bit with a person's mind and behaviour.

axelrafn,
@axelrafn@hachyderm.io avatar

My server seems to take about 300W when booting up and settles at about 150W when all virtual machines are booted up.
I then added my work desktop and the watt meter says the current load is 200W ca. If I use stress to engage all 20 threads on the server that spikes up to 300ẃ.

Am I the odd one out who doesn't think that it is too much?

@alda I'm just still on Icelandic power consumption and prices it seems. Had way much going on there without a care in the world.

@geerlingguy Could something like this be done but using a RPI5 to raid the disks and serve them? I love the idea of having a mobile NAS like that. I'd even go further and add a SD card reader as well as a removable battery bank to the design so it could be run anywhere.

Is anyone from Finland and other countries following this page/account? Are you happy? Well, we know how happy Linus Torvalds is on kernel mailing lists. He must be an exception to the rule, and he lives in the USA. So, I get he is a bit grouchy.

@nixCraft Icelander here, but living in Spain since August. Can verify Icelandic people are happy and joyful, but only those on high dosage anti-depressant medication =)
I've halved my prescription since moving to Spain since there is so much sunlight here (not so much back in Iceland). Also the day/night equilibrium here in Spain is sooooo much nicer =D

Or do you have a whole bunch of unfinished side projects? 🤔

This is fantastic news! And, amazingly, we can get 267Mbps from 80 times the distance between Earth and Moon just with a laser through the emptiness of space. I do have to wonder how far we can get this to go.

And of course, it had to be cats in space! ;D

    @nixCraft the old internet is slowly dying I'm afraid. I've never used Omegle, but I've heard wonderful stories of people who met there and gained insight into other people's lives on this blue marble of ours.

    It's a shame this is what has to come.

    I de-activated my Twitter account today. I had decided to keep it without posting a while back, just in case anyone would try to use my handle to write weird stuff and impersonate me, but I realized there’s no way I’m ever going back to Twitter and posting anything there.

    If someone impersonates me, well, since Twitter has become so ridiculous and toxic, I’m sure people will accept that it’s not me talking.

    I wasn’t using this account, and hadn’t for something like a year, so, bye « X »!

    @thelinuxEXP congrats. Did the same some time ago.

    On the lighter side, we can now all say we share the same ex/X =D

    holy shit, not only does "Apple Music Preview" for Win 11 not handle switching audio devices (first switch = wrong audio frequency, second switch = freeze), it also reliably drops buffers?? I can seek backwards and it keeps skipping over the same portion of the song?

    axelrafn,
    @axelrafn@hachyderm.io avatar

    @fasterthanlime I prefer the Cider client on Windows for Apple Music. It's way snappier and everything works fine as far as I know. I'm still using version 1, which is dead now in regard to support and development. But they have version 2 for cheap.

    I am not connected to them in any way or form, just a fan of the software.

    I also use Cider on Linux.

    @axelrafn@hachyderm.io avatar

    @fasterthanlime I had no idea about that. Never recommending it again =/

    For anyone interesed in the details on the new Raspberry Pi 5 then @geerlingguy has an episode that covers most of the changes and updates 🙂

    I'm sure that PCIe interface was added just to support his shananagins 😁

    @simonzerafa @geerlingguy There are others that offer PCIe, e.g.: ZimaBoard and ZimaBlade, albeit with x86 CPUs, but the PCIe seem to be growing in popularity in SBC lately.

    I'm going to use my army of RPI machines to do other things as well. I'd prefer to run low-wattage computers at the moment.
