Call earlier today: "Hi, this is Visa, Mastercard or AMEX"
Me, sighing: "Listen scammer you're not even trying."
Them: "No not scammer! Why would you say that?"

First official pre-handover inspection with the builder tomorrow. This was after several quite sharp conversations with them that no, it's not OK to start just talking about maybe putting it off a few weeks because they have a number of houses close to handover and maybe we could wait a while.

I'll be very glad when this is over; and the new-house bit will only be part of that reason.

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@jpm Nah they really are quite close. Everything bar appliances install is now complete, though of course there may be minor fixes called for by their QA team or our independent assessor.

(Early into the build a site manager went off from a long-term injury. They didn't back-fill so the site manager is handling 2x the number of houses they should.)

Australia's new DigitalID will feature an advanced 2FA mechanism. You'll have to listen to a random pronunciation of "Maaaate" and determine whether it was friendly, neutral or a deadly-enemy statement.

For teams that work across many countries, daylight savings transitions are chaotic. Some countries don't do daylight savings at all, and for those that do, so many of them transition on different dates. There's like a 4-6 week period twice a year where recurring meeting schedules just get thrown to the wind (and then shot at).

Whenever I read an off-the-grid news article, my GenX brain goes to "The Good Life", which I remember watching as a kid.

@bobthomson70 I never enjoyed Dads Army even on my first watching. I'm not sure how well I'd like The Good Life on a re-watch these days.

If you want to know how much coffee your household goes through, get a yearly subscription. Or two. We have two subscriptions with St Ali – 2 x 1 kg Orthodox beans come in every month, and we still run out of coffee and need a third bag of coffee each month.

And that's with me using pods when I need to for work in my office/bedroom as well.

Handy tip: to get any Australians in a crowd to identify themselves, shout "Am I ever gonna see your face again?"

Did you know that if you write "Kate Middleton" backwards, you get "notelddiM etaK", which is about as useful to your daily life as any other information about the British Royal Family.

@jpm LLMangled marketing.

@jpm that said, “yet strong as unstoppable” is a delightfully tempting claim. I don’t know what it is but they may have sold me.

While the people who protest climate change inaction get more jail than the people who cause climate change, we won't see any tangible improvements.

I can't help but watch the billionaire/corporate race to space and think:

The Star Trek universe and the Wayland-Yutani universe seems like a fork in the road and we are letting the wrong people choose which fork to take.

Currently doing research to find a decent dolly with good wheels and a carrying capacity of 150 KG, and deciding how we can attach a decent platform to it for the move of our . Going to be a bit of a pain to get it into the new house.

Turns out the best dolly options seem to be for moving pianos ... just need to find a decent platform to sit on top of one now.

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@jpm We'll be trusting them to move it, but we want to find out what options there are – at the cost of a small car we're not going to trust it to a $20 dolly from Bunnings.

It's always amazing when someone reveals something that's actually horrifying treatment of a child as if it were something normal. (Been there, done that myself a few times.)

Someone noting: "Of course, [as a kid] I was banned from talking in the car because I'd talk too much."

Hey, that's a sign of shitty parents, don't wear it as some criticism of you.

backupbear,
@backupbear@aus.social avatar

@jpm It was the "banned" bit that irked me. Too much of a parallel to boomer parents who were adamant that children should be seen and not heard.
