Well you didn’t watch season 3, which is the season that actually won these awards.

Why?

beefcat,

Why do you think aiming for NT 5.2 compatibility should preclude them from building a modern GUI-based installer?

beefcat,
@beefcat@beehaw.org avatar

The HP instructions didn’t say that if you connected the cable between the printer and the PC before you had installed the drivers, the printer would not mount as a device. In fact, it would never connect to that PC ever again. Apparently, it ruined the registry until you reformatted and reinstalled the OS.

How do they manage to fuck something up so royally? They clearly knew it was a problem, as they outlined it in their manual. But there’s no way it was cheaper to deal with all the angry support calls and lost customer confidence than to just add some code to the driver installer that fixes the registry settings…

If this happened to me, I wouldn’t reinstall my operating system, I would tell their support technician to fuck off and go buy a printer from a different company.

Even the leaflet is just a shitty bandaid. What if someone picked up a printer used and it didn’t include the leaflet.

It’s outright unacceptable to ship a consumer product that so easily bricks itself like this.

Critics didn’t necessarily go to film school, but they see everything under the sun, so when a movie doesn’t do anything particularly new or is highly derivative without adding its own twist, it bores them. The person who goes to 3-5 movies a year doesn’t care, to them something derivative of 10 movies they haven’t seen is still new and fresh. This is in addition to the technical competency component you mentioned.

I watch a ton of movies so my tastes are more likely to align with those of a professional critic.

the stuffed crust is prepared as a calzone but becomes sushi once the pizza is sliced.

it sounds like they want to cover the birth of the Federation, so maybe it’s a bit of an Enterprise follow-up?

They don’t have Dr. Pepper at my movie theater so I guess this movie really is never seeing the light of day :/

I’m OK with more prequels if it means letting Terry Matalas continue handling the post-TNG timeline.

the socket. sadly this is a design flaw with every usb connector, even type-c.

amusingly, Apple’s lightning is the only connector i’ve seen that seems truly designed for the cable to break before the socket

beefcat,
@beefcat@beehaw.org avatar

mini-usb cables are robust, but the sockets they plug into were pretty fragile, i’ve had multiple break.

Do you have to pay for a service? Probably not if you’re technical enough; a VM in a data center is probably sufficient.

Where are you getting free VM hosting?

also, i feel like most of your argument is rendered moot with encrypted dns solutions like DoH.

beefcat,
@beefcat@beehaw.org avatar

i don’t think many ISPs even offer encrypted DNS, i’m talking about using a third party dns. you can set up a standard dns endpoint that uses DoH upstream to the server of your choice. cloudflared makes this really easy if you are happy using their dns, and you can even have it sit upstream of something like pihole, giving your whole home network dns tracking protection and as blocking without the overhead of a VPN.

You can also get around this by using a non-airline owned travel metasearch engine like Kayak.

you could forgive the obnoxiously stupid packaging and marketing if the device inside that box was still as good as an iPod, but we all know a microsoft i-pod in 2005 would have been a clunky piece of crap. they didn’t figure out the zune until after the iPhone launched and it still wasn’t as polished as iPods from years earlier

not a dedicated chip per se, the trend is to build it directly into the SoC (mobile devices) or the dedicated GPU
