Thought haver. I like thinking about how user research, design, UX can be infused into engineering orgs. Currently, I’m a technical leader at Cisco Security, and adjunct faculty at CMU’s HCI institute. I enjoy coffee.

My blogging workflow is pretty minimal, so I thought I'd blog about my coffee workflow.

It's a ritual I enjoy every day.

@cory @bjhess I'm also petty because I've been rooting against Lebron since he went to Miami!

@bjhess @cory we definitely have a series now don’t we? ;)

@cory @bjhess it’s hard to remember what the wolves did games 1 and 2 but at this point it doesn’t seem they have any answers

@bjhess @cory yeah, I'm annoyed by how it officiating is a bigger factor these days. It seems like after every call, there is always a player raising their hands and complaining.

I have this tag from my coat that has four quadrants. I think it’s funny one of the features it lists is Warm. Imagine a conversation between the designer who is obsessed with symmetry and the marketer.

I grabbed this stapled stack of papers that a server was using to take orders. I love the handwriting. Seeing how others do their jobs. There’s a word for everyday objects.

Keep talking about the abuses and harm
This topic often encroaches into philosophy which is interesting because most tech bros have no clue

@robb yes, that was such an interesting/strange time. it accentuated the divide between folks with kids and without.

the former would talk about all the new free time they had now that they were WFH, starting new hobbies.

I had 3 kids under 5 and it was a very different story…

Sutures are out and my foot is in a boot now. I can now kind of stand in place, which is a huge improvement.

Shouts out to the American Disabilities Act that gave way to all the accommodations in public spaces. In this day and age, it's hard to imagine something like this being enacted and having such a profound change on our infrastructure.

Curb cutouts benefit everyone!

A Grinder PSA.

I know James Hoffmann, in a few videos now, heavily suggests doing the RDT (ross droplet technique) on coffee in single dose grinders; indeed, in one video, he heavily suggests doing this 3x as much to get, as he says 'better anti static results". He even demos it on a DF64 Gen 2 in his Best grinders under £500.

But he's wrong. At least with grinders equipped with a plasma generator.

Doing the RDT on grinders with a plasma generator (like the DF64 Gen 2) WILL GUM UP the works inside around the plasma coil, making it 100% ineffective, and increase the overall static issues.

Don't RDT any grinder with a plasma coil.

Got this direct from TWO grinder manufacturers. I've been told one is trying to get James to do a new video "recanting" the advice. It's causing them a lot of service calls.

@jannem @coffeegeek @tredstone @coffee @espresso I also do RDT with my Kingrinder K6. It makes a big difference for me too.

Started a new habit as I learn Go-lang. Namely a document.

Spending just a bit of time up front adding headlines for the topics helps in the future scan-ability.

Also, I'm incorporating lots of links and leveraging back links.

it was my first time trying coffeegeek's aeropress inverted brew method (https://coffeegeek.com/guides/howtos/aeropress-inverted-brew-method-how-to/) today.

@coffeegeek is adamant that a metal filter is required, so that's a new addition to my gear.

Only thing is, I almost left it in the trash because I'm used to ejecting the whole puck, including paper filter, into the trash :)

I resonate with this statement from @baldur post:

> The odds of a project’s success are dictated by user research, design, process, and strategy, not the individual technological innovations in programming.

This is in the context of whether LLMs are effective at improving developer productivity. Yet:

> Whether you’re a bear or a bull on LLMs, we as developers are going to get screwed either way, especially if we’re web developers.

@robb thanks for sharing the hyperkey app. I have also mucked around in the past with BetterTouchTool to do this, but it was always a bit tedious. I’m giving it another try, and I like that it’s a single app that does one thing.
