the one good thing about the shitty center-running bike lanes on Valencia is that they will be very easy to retrofit to the Burrito Plan

-one way southbound (westside lane, right side in this picture)
-center lane commercial loading

  • two-way cycletrack in the eastside lane (left side in this picture)

I spent a bit of time on this “bike lane” today and had a few observations on how empirically terrible they will be

  • any time someone is trying to park, other cars will jam around that car and use the bike lane to pass (and a rubber bumper and plastic hit posts every 40’ will not stop this)

  • so many cars are and will continue to make u-turns

  • no drivers are going to respect the no-left-turn signs, and this will be the thing that drivers will actively despise

Anyone reading Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars Trilogy" or any part of it quickly realizes that while the novels are full of technical details, there are very few maps and those that exist are very coarse.

Here are some maps I made while reading the books several years ago, showing cities, places and plot info. The background is a USGS Topographical Map from Wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/USGS-PlanetMars-TopographicalMap.png

Corrections and new locations will be posted to this thread.

@65dBnoise @andrealuck haven’t updated this in a long time, and my map broke long ago, but you may find the location geojson files interesting https://github.com/burritojustice/mars-map/tree/master/geojson

@65dBnoise @andrealuck cool! there are a couple of CSVs at the top level too but if I remember correctly I generated all the geojson from those, with some editing afterwards
