@christianselig hey do you know somebody at Imgur at developer relations or something like that?

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@tzeejay I used to but they're not the most responsive lately unfortunately. I'd try just emailing api at imgur.com

Ooo, iOS 15 has dropped below 5% usage in Apollo

Silly SwiftUI question of the week: I want a view pushed to the bottom of the screen. On iPhones with home indicators, the safe area inset takes care of positioning it a nice distance from the bottom edge, but on older iPhones, it's smushed right up against the bottom since there's no safe area inset.

Is there a way to give a bit of nice visual spacing if there's no safe area inset already doing so?

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

(Could I put a padding that applies to both regardless? Sure, but the padding is already okay on the iPhone 14 so it would push it up unnecessarily)

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@reh What's the variable?

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@martin_schillig Yeah it looks terrible 😛

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@EshuMarneedi Yeah I'm only finding some GeometryReader hacks unfortunately

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@kylebshr Given that Apple doesn't I'm not sure I'd agree 😛 (UITabBar, UIToolbar, etc.)

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@reh Yeah that's a little fragile. Keep in mind the first connected scene might not even be the active one that you're referencing

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@kylebshr SwiftUI’s bottom spacing without any padding applied looks identical to Apple's UI bottom spacing to me. I'm just saying I don't want to add any more because it would look inconsistent with Apple's

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@kylebshr It still looks the same to me even if I match the font size to the tab bar items. Either way, my point is that an extra 2 points of padding or whatever they do on the non-home indicator devices is not nearly enough, and the defaults on those with home indicators look good to me, and if I added what it would take to to move the non-home indicator device text up to every device it would look really weird

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@reh Also keep in mind if you present a screen modally on iPad even though the device has a home indicator that screen won't have safe area insets.

I think I'm just going to wrap the "view controller" in a geometry reader and read its safe area insets

I wonder why more devices like the Steamdeck or ROG Ally don't offer an OLED screen option like the Switch (which is also cheaper), it's a pretty awesome aspect of a handheld device

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Joekw The Ally is a 16:9 device, so they could just source the panel the Switch uses, no? 1080p 120Hz LCD for the hardcore gamers, and 720p 60Hz OLED for casuals who just want a pretty screen would be a pretty awesome lineup

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@cliophate @Joekw Oh huh, TIL, maybe a “I don't care about VRR filthy casual OLED edition" 😛 I just want a Switch with a bit more power

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@cliophate @Joekw Yeah, and the screen size was only 5.5” ;_;

I posted about Apollo accessibility for VoiceOver users. Please give this post some attention if you have a moment; we need an alternative to Dystopia badly. If you're not familiar with Apollo, I urge you to put down your pitchfork; it is developed by just one person and he genuinely wants to do better for us. We need an organized group of people to direct that, and that's what I've tried to start here. https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13mse5q/accessibility_for_voiceover_users/

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Marco @simon That was a great post, thanks so much both of you. It was a long weekend in Canada so I took a bit of a break so just wanted you to know I wasn't ignoring this post!

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Marco @simon I'd love your feedback on this comment if you have a chance! Basically just unsure how to best weigh verbosity/speed (I know different folks have different preferences so there's probably not a one-size-fits-all solution), and if settings are the solution, how best to surface that so it's discoverable https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13mse5q/comment/jlagpkc/?context=3

The stages of me with my new OLED Switch.

Stage 1: This screen is gorgeous! I'm so glad I bought this. 🤩

Stage 2: OMFG some of this TotK text is microscopic. Is there really no way to make it larger? 🔎

Stage 3: Into the dock you permanently go!

@rafa @christianselig

christianselig,

@MuseumShuffle @rafa Yeah overall it's gorgeous and I'm having a riot, but it's so funny when you catch a waterfall in the distance sometimes that looks like it's from the N64 :p

I notice Apollo for Reddit is shortlisted for the hall of fame. I wonder if @AppleVis can get people to pester the developer to add rotor actions. They're badly needed and one of maybe two or three things that would put the app in range of Dystopia in terms of accessibility.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@simon @jakobrosin @AppleVis Thanks again for that one, I'm going to have some fun digging into some more accessibility stuff

Happened to notice today is my ‘cake day’ on Reddit — the anniversary of the day I first created my account (12 years ago, apparently). I know Reddit comes in for a lot of stick for 4chan-style twattery, but it’s consistently one of the funnest, sweetest, most rewarding… social network…? sites I’ve ever used.

(As always, third party apps make it so much more pleasant. Can’t imagine using Reddit without @christianselig’s Apollo. Happy to pay for Ultra.)

@chrisphin Thanks Christopher, and happy belated cake day :D

Hey @christianselig - long-time Apollo user (+ subscriber) and big fan of all you do.

Just set this up to reach out (so apologies for the barren profile)

We're founders of a small B2C tech startup and would love to connect.

Apollo is so well done and we have a lot to learn.

Do you have some time to help us, fresh entrepreneurs, out?

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@TwosJoe Of course! I hope you're not overestimating my wisdom though, but I'm happy to talk, I'll DM you my email
