    With talk once again about encrypted DNS thanks to Microsoft starting early on their "embrace, extend, extinguish" campaign, can we maybe first decide on a good replacement for, "Man in the Middle"?

    While I appreciate writers and editors trying to use non-sexist terms most of their attempts are just...weird. Either because they're relying on AI or because they really really want to keep MITM as the acronym.

    A few possibilities are, "Stranger in the Middle" and "Interposer attack".

    Or maybe since some seem so tied to keeping the acronym, "Meddler in the Middle". This has the advantage of recognizing that it doesn't even have to be a person at all.

    Can someone explain why State Farm is dropping policies in the very areas least likely to experience large fires in the next 50-70 years?

    During the 2017-2020 fires it quickly became clear by comparing maps that the new fires were specifically happening in areas that had not had a conflagration in the last 50-70 years.

    @mjgardner @foone the 8 bit Commodore machines use 300bps communication speed to the tape device. Using 120 minute tapes, with no error checking or correction (usually the ROM load routine would read the data twice to confirm the data was read correctly, incredibly inefficient) it would take about 533,130 (!) tapes to store that many 1.44MB floppies so somewhere around 1070K hours (about 5 years of continuously changing tapes every two hours) loading, assuming they were using 1.44MB floppies in the game joke. The mechanism is kind of harsh on thin 120m tapes, so I doubt it would be possible to do it a small multiple of times, even if it worked the first time. [edit: dropped a MB to KB conversion in my first version, whoops]

    I took some pseudo-selfies with my Sony Mavica FD5 from 1997, which saves jpegs on a floppy disk. Amazingly, this is the high quality mode!
