I coined the term โ€œMac Assed Mac Appโ€.

A software developer from Portland Oregon. Iโ€™ve been writing iOS and Mac apps since 2008 and Ruby since 2021.

This might controversial. I donโ€™t like or use view models in the way Iโ€™ve seen iOS or macOS apps use them. Iโ€™m pretty much entirely resistant to any object which mostly exists to shuttle data around between other things.

Iโ€™m also increasingly against implementing things a certain way because a โ€œthought leaderโ€ wrote it down that way at some point in the past.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

I guess this is the same instinct that keeps me from using service objects in apps. That pattern just seems to give you some really gross code to organize things in ways that Rails gives us better tools for without.

Iโ€™m not switching from macOS ever, but Iโ€™m still curious about other platforms. What do desktop Linux/BSD users with taste use for their GUI? Iโ€™m yet to see one that looks like it has near the level of polish Iโ€™m used to.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@linux_nerd I guess the idea of customizing my desktop isnโ€™t very appealing to me. I just want it to be well designed and thought through out of the box.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@sjs @linux_nerd I guess thatโ€™s why Iโ€™d never be a desktop Linux user. Consistency in aesthetics and also how things work like having consistent key commands is way too important to me. I also think the distros that are supposed to look good kind of donโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜‚

I don't know what Nova is doing to basically just not working with rbenv at all no matter how I set my path, but I'm getting pretty sick of messing with it. It's pretty clear whatever the extension sees is not correct.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@sjs yeah my fear is that Ruby doesnโ€™t quite make the cut for editors to bother supporting :(

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@sjs it feels like no editor recognizes that version managers are a thing and they should just explicitly support that. With VS Code you just need to make sure to set up rbenv in zprofile or zshenv since I think itโ€™s using a non-interactive shell mode for running that stuff.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@Antichrista Thatโ€™s okay! I really want it to! Iโ€™ll reach out to them.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

I hate that I've never been able to get Solargraph working very reliably with Nova, because I enjoy the editor itself so much, but since whatever my setup is appears to be working great with VSCode, BBEdit, and Zed, I feel like I've spent enough time trying to make this work.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@Antichrista I will. I think itโ€™s both, but probably more that Nova isnโ€™t exposing something correctly to the extensions since it seems to be a problem with a lot of them.

So the new Instagram text thing is reported to have ActivityPub support and instead of being happy at all the new labor that could potentially be coming to the standard, Mastodon people are now actively encouraging instances to not federate with any of that stuff. K.

@film_girl Cool cool cool cool.

I think I've got this?

Great Britain: The island that contains England, Wales, and Scotland.

England: The largest country on Great Britain.

The United Kingdom: The country which contains the countries of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The British Commonwealth: A somewhat loose association of 56 member states that the current British monarch is the head of while not having political power in those countries.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@jeff I think so too. Apparently, I left out the channel islands or something. Also, maybe call the countries inside your country something else. For example, you could call them states.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@jeff I think it was kind of Elizabeths pet thing. Who knows what'll happen with it going forward. That being said, I'm not British and I'm sure actual British people have much more informed opinions than a random dipshit from Portland whoโ€™s still trying to get what countries are what straight ๐Ÿ˜‚

A lot of gets easier the moment you stop having to deal with actual concurrency. I'm not saying languages shouldn't have those abilities, I'm just saying there's a whole class of concerns you no longer have to think about.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@doggojones thatโ€™s why we use different languages for different things :)

The idea that there are Christians who think you can love gay people but hate their โ€œsin.โ€ You canโ€™t love someone and think a core part of who they are is wrong.

Itโ€™s like if someone said they donโ€™t hate Christians, they just hate their beliefs and think theyโ€™re wrong and are should stop. Except itโ€™s worse, because being Christian is a choice and something you can stop being.

@donw @gruber Based on my research, there are an awful lot of pastors on YouTube, strongly making the argument that being attracted to men doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re a homosexual ๐Ÿ‘€

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@gruber Exactly! Itโ€™s nuts. Iโ€™m starting to realize they arenโ€™t trying to convince non-Christians, theyโ€™re saying it to convince each other theyโ€™re not hateful and to give cover to people who might otherwise be conflicted over it.

collin, to random
@collin@ruby.social avatar

Also that people think you canโ€™t be hateful because youโ€™re just following the Bible. Acting a certain way because of a made up book from the Bronze Age doesnโ€™t make it less hateful.

collin,

@YakyuNightOwl itโ€™s wild.

Teenage Engineering make some of techs most beautiful products. Their design team is so talented! https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/12/23721033/teenage-engineering-tp7-audio-recorder-motorized-tape-reel-price

@refactoredd A lot of it would be cool as a thing to experiment with if it weren't so costly, but I don't have unlimited money for things that I don't have a clear use for. The prices have gone up a lot over time.

If I could use a different editor than for and get an easy-to-set-up debugger, good refactoring, and equally good completion, I would jump to it. As things stand, however, nothing is even close.

I've thought about it, and I think I'm going to become a tucked-in-shirt man when it comes to the kind of long sleeved Pendleton shirts I tend to wear a lot. It just looks better. Thank you for your time.
