#datascience in #astrophysics, yes I have a PhD in #astronomy, MSc in #computerscience, fable for #machinelearning&#statistics. Writing anonymously here to cover some touchy subjects.

Ask me anything about #astronomy & #astrophysics news items and data analysis in #physics.

The currency of life isn't money, it's options. A monk can choose to leave the meager life, a prisoner can't. Money also gives options, but so do contacts, skills, knowledge, ...

You can't win an argument someone who doesn't care. Wider point: Aligning values of othe people with yours is too hard. Instead, you want to be in the position of not needing them for success and they needing you instead.

@deshipu I was more thinking along the lines of having healthy boundaries, and don't take any BS, it's below you. And yes to some financial emergency net.

Lost my bike key, so I pushed my bike home for 20 min with the back wheel lifted like a . No one cares, it's surprisingly not that noticable. 5 min metal sawing and the lock is gone. Thought about but my key is gone anyways.

@proactiveservices Seems to be a common need, lets make a start-up to make locked bike transportation easy and quick. Next, we develop a convenient unlock-bike-as-a-service app where users can upload a geotagged photo of the locked bike they need retrieved, and we deliver it to their address. I'm sure we would get lots of paying costumers!

Just happily chopping some aubergine for dinner. (Kids are having burgers. Don't believe me that I prefer aubergines.)

As it's done many times over the years, a @wjs post from 2005 (!) comes quietly to mind…

> I don't actually know much about real samurai, but the basic thing I've heard is they stand and stare at each other for hours, and then suddenly BAM strike once and the other guy is down.

> That's how you should code.

I 🥰 this post. Thanks Will 🎁

@carlton @wjs Most real samurai weren't fighters but beaurocratic administrators, and had swords as a status symbol.

TIL that the universe was opaque after the Big Bang, which is nothing I've ever thought about before, and I was all 🤯

@czottmann @skrishna yeah, it was tough times. And we had to walk to school for hours.

Why ? For the tech development? For unexpected industry applications? Because it is fun? Recently I am wondering whether the astronomy news are serving as a apolitical relief to a stressed . If so, are we actually in the entertainment industry?

@jaztrophysicist thanks. Just a related thought 1/2: "fundamental" doesn't mean better or more important. You can take a car engine apart all and study the parts under a microscope, but won't learn how traffic jams work.

I now supervise 3 young (<25yr) students on different numerical projects, from master to PhD, we exchange and discuss codes daily.

It is quite striking that these new "native digital" (term allowed for people born in ~2000?) actually have HUGE gaps, and it's not their fault (neither is mine).

Examples:

  • "it doesn't work" - with 0 attached error message, plot, information.

  • assuming a .exe compiled on a machine would just work elsewhere (like an app?).

@franco_vazza on asking effective questions, has anyone found a polite guideline version for graduate students of http://catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ?

If you want to make an airport guard's day, put an electric shaver on top of a big bar of soap and have some headphone cables around. Also, for a free massage

@deshipu thanks! Unfortunately chocolate doesn't live that long when I'm traveling. :D
