After making billions in #TaxDeductible donations to his philanthropy, the owner of #Tesla & SpaceX gave away far less than required in some yrs— & what he did give often supported his #SelfInterests.
Before Mar 2021, #ElonMusk’s charitable foundation never announced any donations to CameronCounty, an impoverished region at the southern tip of TX that is home to his #SpaceX launch site & local ofcls who help regulate it.
“Kindness & eagerness to learn (& parents that worked at #SpaceX) were the only criteria for admission,” wrote Joshua Dahn, the initial head of the school.
#AdAstra later moved to SpaceX’s Hawthorne, CA, headquarters & grew to >50 students. About ½ were related to SpaceX employees, Dahn said in an email. Dahn’s contract even said that the #IntellectualProperty he developed at the school would be ½ owned by #ElonMusk personally….
2 fmr #SpaceX execs, who spoke anonymously for fear of retribution, recalled #AdAstra was sometimes discussed as a perk for the children of execs, tho it was understood to be near impossible for the offspring of rank-&-file employees to gain admission.
…The Foundation donated $10M to #OpenAI —…where he sat on the board of dirs.… #ElonMusk said in a suit against the org & its founders that he personally gave an additional $34M before stopping in ‘20. Musk previously said he gave ~$100M to OpenAI.
