Absolutely ridiculous. The clump of brain cells behind Brands Town, Spectra Video, We Distribute, and VidCommons. Former CM @ Diaspora. I love Ween, adventure games, and the Fediverse.

The absolute worst part of working hard on something and putting it out into the world is the intense waiting period, where you wonder if anyone is actually going to appreciate it, let alone pay attention to it.

This was honestly such a fun interview. Wonderful person, fantastic energy. There are some people building really amazing things out here.

The use of email and could mostly disappear if there were dedicated apps to ingest/parse feeds and read or listen to articles. The bonus being that we'd also have comments and virality. Then podcasts and video too.

deadsuperhero,

@wjmaggos This is something we really want to do with We Distribute, but the integration doesn't really support mapping activity types to WordPress post types yet.

Which is a shame, because it could make following a website infinitely more powerful! Imagine following a site, and seeing a medley of status updates, articles, videos, images, and more? But, it can all be broken into different contexts in different apps, like a video could be seen in PeerTube, whereas a podcast night show up in Funkwhale?

This is a big goal for us in 2024, but it's one of those things that I've never done before. From the outside, trying to find resources and details on how to do this feels endlessly confounding.

It's frustrating, because founding an LLC seems comparatively easy? But, we want to try to take the coop route.

deadsuperhero,

@kai Been there, totally understand. 😅

No matter how many times I try to play it, The Outer Worlds is just not a good game. The writing is weak, the graphics aged really poorly, and the story is mostly super forgettable.

I know it was kind of a letdown at launch, but even trying to play for five minutes makes me want to switch to literally any other game.

I went back to it, hoping maybe it might fill the void that Starfield's disappointment left, but no.

deadsuperhero,

@hypolite Yes. I've beaten it several times, loved Phantom Liberty. I think they did a great job with the 2.1 update, it's such a different game than what we got at launch.

deadsuperhero,

@hypolite The only downside on my latest playthrough is that I've almost completed almost all of the side quests and gigs, prior to the final mission.

I know that CD Project Red is planning on doing another game in the future, but I kind of wish that the four or so cancelled expansions were still happening. V has such a great story, and the relationship with Johnny ended up being a real highlight of gameplay for me.

deadsuperhero,

@hypolite I just want more!

You’ve seen that drama about the autistic lawyer. And you were at the edge of your seat regarding the autistic doctor.

Now get ready for that heavy, hard-hitting drama about the autistic model train designer!

deadsuperhero,

@atomicpoet I hope it's called something like "Off the Rails".

We fucking did it! Yeaaaah! 🎉

I'm sorry that I say "like" and "um" and "uh" so much. I promise I'll get better! 😅

Many thanks to @damon and @laurenshof for all of their help and support in getting this thing off the ground. ♥️

Misskey and its many derivatives feels like a situation where you have a bunch of Linux distributions that are all forks of one another.

I can't stop gushing about @penpot. It's an unbelievably good experience, to the point that an amateur designer like me can quickly build out interfaces and component libraries for design projects.

It's so easy to use, and it's also FOSS! Just phenomenally good all around.

I am groggy, winded, and tired, but I'm back at work and functioning again. 🙂

I'm in the process of getting articles written again. It's going to be a sluggish start, the research phase always takes the longest.

Are there any recent developments that I ought to check out? I'm a little out of the loop. 😅

Apparently, Firefish.tech is now opting to shut down, both because of the decline of the Firefish project, but also the increased overhead of trying to run and moderate an instance with a smaller team. 😔

I think they're making the right call, given the circumstances, but it was a good instance, and I enjoyed Firefish very much.

I don't particularly want to go back to a Mastodon-based system, but the various Misskey forks out there still have a lot of work to do before I put this level of faith in them again.

deadsuperhero,

@vinzv Yeah, running an instance is really not for the faint of heart. Doubly so if it's the flagship for a fledgling project: on top of drama, moderation issues, and policy differences, you also have to deal with architectural problems in the software you're building.

On the flip-side, though: it's unreasonable to expect people to moderate their communities for free. I don't have all the answers, but if I were to launch my own project someday, I'd want to make sure that my moderation team was paid well, and large enough to handle the instance's population size.

Turns out I'm sick with COVID again! 🥳

We masked up once we started feeling sick, just to be careful. But, the vast majority of people we came across haven't been masking at all - nearly every flight we were on was maskless, as were the crowds of thousands of tourists wandering around Washington D.C. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was packed with idiots who had no concept of personal space.

deadsuperhero,

The symptoms are awful: painful aches in your bones, moving at a snail's pace, a cough that cracks the skull, a sensation of freezing and burning at the same time, intense fatigue, heavy sweating, constant headache, mental fuzz that you can feel through your entire skull.

My heart is hammering in my chest, despite barely doing any kind of activities today.

@J12t@social.coop avatar

Some people prefer to talk about the "social web" instead of the "fediverse".

If you do, do you just prefer one term over another, or do you think "social web" could emcompass more functionality than what today's fediverse can do?

Curious.

deadsuperhero,

@J12t So, at this point: I think a lot of these concepts and technologies can be found in ongoing work:

  • Solid covers a lot of what I've talked about regarding having a storage space on the Web, along with Identity, Access of Resources, and delegating who and what can access something.

  • ActivityPub, while imperfect, provides a blueprint of how to connect spaces across the web, and use it as a dispatching system for social interactions.

I've seen a few projects working on fusing these two things together, and the results are extremely promising. ActivityPods gives us a framework that we can actually work with, and apps like Memory by @Damon demonstrate that we can build incredible social experiences on top of this thing while taking care of the federation and data parts.

deadsuperhero,

@J12t

https://activitypods.org/

Memory does not yet have a site or release, as it is in an internal development phase, but I managed to find these:

https://lemmy.world/post/9542654
https://fedi.software/@Memory

You might want to talk to @Damon directly, he'd be able to show you more than what I can.
