@HailsandAles What do you make of the new Nocturnus?

Summing up Steve Albini's musical/aesthetic legacy in one song is near impossible, but I'm gonna go for this one:

The best ever ode to parochial teenage nihilism and destructiveness.

For anyone who's heard any of these (my current top 5 metal albums of 2024), curious to know your favorite (and if you haven't heard one or more, I highly recommend them).

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 Never heard of any of these, gave all a quick listen. Ribspreader know what they're doing but there isn't much intrigue. Shellshock has great riffs/vocals and some interesting warped musical ideas, but the drums sound awful. Hemorrhoid is total Carcass worship and I am OK with that (production is great).
Witch Vomit is intruiging, Incantation-with-melody? Will return and see.
Obscurial is a bit like Nocturnus, some Voivod-y riffs, nice vocals. Will return.
For now, Hemorrhoid.

It's been a Cypress Hill kind of afternoon

@jake4480 That first album is ridiculously good (as is their Tiny Desk Concert).

I walked to the cafe and met a friend for brunch, then did a 60 minute power walk. Total distance 4.6 miles so double my daily target of 2.3 miles. I like to get ahead on days when I’m not working and/or the weather’s good in case for some reason I have to take a day off. Obviously no one will know whether I actually walk 70 miles in March except me! But I owe it to the people who have sponsored me and to The Samaritans, so I’ll keep posting my progress for accountability

@purplepadma Yes, lots of lesser celandine out at the moment, and some purple dog violet too.

Wondering what the five best Sugababes songs are....

Maybe:

  1. Overload
  2. In the Middle
  3. Too Lost In You
  4. Freak Like Me
  5. Stronger

Fear Factory - Demanufacture (Full Album)

"WHERE IS YOUR SAVIOR NOW?"

An album that deeply marked my youth. My journey into metal started also with this.

@neurothing I love how much syncopation there is on that album. Listening to the lilting rhythm on the title track now.
I feel that many, many bands borrowed the super-tight, clinical, mechanical sound but they forgot that sense of lolloping groove that FF had.

I mean, this is not my kind of music at all, but I guess it isn't aimed at me. Some people seem to like it.

What I find so odd is the approach to the video. Are drums just a backing track now? It feels more like a demo in a guitar shop than anything else. Is this a common approach nowadays?

@jake4480 @HailsandAles To my knowledge, I am not much of a 'war metal' fan but I don't know much about it tbh. But that first Antediluvian album from 2011, that sounds like what I would want 'war metal' to sound like.

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 @HailsandAles Oh this EP is decent, not checked it out before. It was the album I was referring too (TtCoH).

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 @HailsandAles I don't know many of these bands at all, apart from the aforementioned and Blasphemy of course (never been as big a fan of that band as everyone else seems to be!).

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 @HailsandAles Thanks, I've listened a couple of times now. My issue with it is that it is very 'on the nose', there isn't much 'messiness' here. So there are cool riffs and a good production, but for modern OSDM I really crave some 'slipperiness', around the beat. I'd enter Swallowed's "Lunarterial" into that kind of conversation (re: interesting 'war metal' stuff that captures a very unpredictable vibe).

Harmony Corruption by Napalm Death. Still so good

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@HailsandAles It might be my favourite album of theirs actually, it is probably the one I go back to most often (though I think the "Mentally Murdered" EP is their best stuff overall).

Scorn Defeat by Sigh

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@HailsandAles Are you a Master's Hammer fan?

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@HailsandAles They're 100% worth getting into, both their early albums "Ritual" and "Jilemnický okultista" are legendary, I assume they were an influence on that early Sigh stuff (they certainly influenced the Norwegian second wave stuff).

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@HailsandAles Oh and the "Finished" demo is well worth checking too... pretty raw and intense for 1988!

@jake4480 Don't forget the new StarGazer EP....

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 "A Merging to the Boundless" is probably their best stuff

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 "A Scream that tore the Sky" is pretty great too.

Coffins and Cianide are overdue for new albums

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 Their '92 demo is the one

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 Also, try the Maimed demo from 1991, another Illinois lost DM classic. Very similar to Autopsy.

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 I really like the blasting on that demo... it is one of the few bands that manages to do very slow and very fast without mashing the gear-shifts.

djrobotham,
@djrobotham@maly.io avatar

@jake4480 Oh, another one I recommend (without hesitation) is Cyanotic (Denmark) demo from 1995. I could listen to that one forever.
