It’s been a busy week, ending thankfully with an afternoon off enabling a wee wander round the city centre to get a few things. We moved house a month ago to the edge of town so it was nice to be in the centre for the first time since then. In a way I suspect I’ll enjoy the city centre more because I’ll plan ahead and make the most of it: visiting the spice shop, off-licence etc.

Now sitting in the garden listening to music, enjoying a beer (Aldi, sadly) and mulling over the General Election.

@eclectech I didn’t know that, it’s always surprising to find out how many places we previously harnessed renewable power.

Massive traffic tailbacks on walk to work, arrogant, dangerous drivers deciding this makes it okay to charge through a green man crossing 3 cars scattering multiple pedestrian), or drive up one way roads illegally. Grrr
Wtf is it with entitled, dangerous drivers?

I have spent most of the day fixing the electrics on my tractor. They are now fixed, and, in fact, significantly better than they ever have been – even a real fuse box.

Having fixed it, I hauled one log out of the wood and ran it out of diesel.

Bother.

drnoble,

@simon_brooke need to get an electric tractor then 😁

The joys of a rail replacement bus, and thus the loss of three and a bit hours of work time, for the final leg of my journey. Ah well, I may as well kick back and share some photos of the last few days…

drnoble,
@drnoble@mastodon.scot avatar

@simonvarwell was about to say I didn’t think any buses went down Cowgate, then re-read it’s a rail replacement. Hope you get home at some point tonight!

Ah the joys of Sunday train travel. I’m in West Yorkshire (photos later) heading home today, and there are two obstacles. One was solvable - a lift to an adjacent station to start my journey there - and the other is my York to Inverness LNER train terminating in Edinburgh due to repair schedules. There are replacement buses, but it loses me three hours’ work time (and also surely means the Monday morning LNER service to London will also be a bus as far as Edinburgh).

drnoble,
@drnoble@mastodon.scot avatar

@simonvarwell it’s possibly also a result of the LNER drivers strike yesterday. I was luck and got a seat on one of the few trains running to London

King Charles gives himself a whopping pay rise from £86.3mn last year and to £124.8mn in 2025-26
The Crown Estate, which controls the monarchy’s legacy portfolio of assets, is set to earn more than £8bn up to 2031 from a boom in revenues from offshore wind projects. This is because since 1964 the estate owns the seabed up to 12 nautical miles from Britain’s coast. This is more money being stolen from the Scottish people! #NotMyKing #independence #scottishindependence #youyesyet

drnoble,
@drnoble@mastodon.scot avatar

@Funwithphotos @simon_brooke as @Wen has already pointed out, this is another case of “except for listeners in Scotland”, where we have the Crown Estate Scotland. Although I 100% agree it should just be The Estate Scotland and

I’ve been working on this on and off for months now, but I think my research listing the world's is for the moment complete

467 towers in my list (of which status unknown 31, and destroyed or never built 42)

Of the rest, 268 are to be found in Google Street View, 126 are not

And of the towers still likely standing today, 358 are replicas, 25 resemblances, 11 derivatives

Many but not all mapped here https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/eiffel-towers-derivatives-and-replicas_1006050#4/52.11/16.13

Next: complete the map 🙂

@timrichards@aus.social avatar

IMO, streaming services should be banned from ending a series with a cliffhanger. We finally got around to watching Severance, two years after it first aired, and it ends with a bloody cliffhanger!

Very annoying, after you put in all that time – you feel like you've been cheated. There's still months to the second season release, and who's to say that won't also end with a cliffhanger? And there's always a danger of a cliffhanger show getting cancelled without a conclusion.

Rather than making me keen to continue, it's more likely to make me drop the series (which I did with Umbrella Academy and The Great after their first seasons ended with cliffhangers). Stop treating my time as unimportant, TV creators.

drnoble,
@drnoble@mastodon.scot avatar

@timrichards simple solution: don’t watch them in the first place 😶

A long time ago on a social media platform far, far away (well, October 2020 on Twitter) I began a chronological watch-through of the Star Wars canon. I am barely on Birdville now, so have moved the thread here.

Below is a link to a pdf with a very crude copy & paste job of my entire thread so far, so you can go back to the beginning and read the whole story. I will pick up the thread again below this tweet.

Happy reading, and may the force live long and shiny.
