Jury duty stipends indexed to cost of living.

Today, in my county, you get $20 a day. That won’t even cover parking near the courthouse.

Serving on a jury shouldn’t prevent you from being able to make rent for the month.

I read the wiki page. Pretty barebones, but it did link to www.bbc.com/news/magazine-34705968

In theory, I could entertain an argument about having criminals repay some of the costs of dealing with them, that’s not what’s going on here.

The sum that is able to be collected doesn’t go straight into the county coffers, either - the jail contracts with a company

The jail gets 30%, the company gets 70%.

It really just looks like just another way to exploit prisoners for profit.

Doesn’t anyone say ‘slashdotted’ anymore?

Anytime I feel uncertain about whether I’m talking to relatives “enough”, I remind myself that the phone works both ways.

Why is TikTok seen as privacy invading and bad, but Facebook is fine?

I’m not here to claim that Tiktok is completely harmless, or that it’s even a good site. I’m sure they absolutely do collect as much personal information as they can, and I’m sure they give it to the Chinese government whenever they ask. But I don’t understand how Meta and Facebook are meant to be any better? There’s...

Primitive Technology

Low volume (not even 1 video a month), high quality, highly entertaining.

Beware of the copycats, though.

I’m the opposite: I initially wanted kids, but my spouse was ambivalent. I’ve come around: We’re not going to have kids, and I’m ok with that.

I enjoyed the story arc leading up to Endgame, but since then, they’ve filmed so much that I just feel like I can’t keep up. The last movie I watched was Multiverse of Madness where I spent about half the movie going “Huh, I feel like I’m missing stuff from the Wanda TV show”. I had never seen Spider-Man: No Way Home, either. And I guess there was a Loki show and a Marvel “What If” series, too?

Being a Marvel fan shouldn’t have to be a job!

The headline is really misleading. She now works for Costco corporate doing marketing training. The typical store employee is still around $18/hour.

This just in: Corporate jobs pay more than public school teaching jobs. Film at eleven!

@elephantium@lemmy.world avatar

How TF am I mischaracterizing it? The teacher in this story got a pay bump by taking a marketing job with Costco corporate, not by working in the warehouse. The headline implies that she got a raise by working for her local Costco. That’s misleading.

Less … bigoted? Were there themes of bigotry in Harry Potter that I missed? Or are you simply looking for a better-regarded author?

elephantium,
@elephantium@lemmy.world avatar

Huh, TIL I’m a little short for a Stormtrooper at 1.68m

elephantium,
@elephantium@lemmy.world avatar

Why not? Probably because:

Bike pollution: .

Car pollution: oooooooooo

Plane pollution: OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOO

(bike pollution is slightly more than nil just because of the CO2 we breathe out while riding)

As someone who also rode in cars in the 80s, I call BS. Cars today are superior in a lot of ways like fuel economy, crash safety, and probably reliability.

But cars in the 80s didn’t spy on you. Cars today do. That’s not superior.

Cars in the 80s were easier to work on. Cars today can require absurd things like dismounting the motor just to get to the spark plugs. That’s not superior.

Cars in the 80s had physical knobs and switches to control everything from turn signals, windshield wipers, defogger, radio volume, you name it. Cars today frequently have some or all of these features buried in a submenu on a touchscreen. Muscle memory? Forget it!

That’s not superior.

My gf (f23) found an old video of me (m22) with an ex and wont talk to me now.

I am my gfs first partner, she is my second. The girl I dated prior (for 6 months) was a vlogger and for like 3 months made a lotta relationship and prank videos wth me which I was fine with at the time. Now my current gf is my first ever real crush and Ive been into her for a decade....

elephantium,
@elephantium@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, you both sound like you have some maturing to do. She’s got insecurity/jealousy/stalkerish problems, and you’re acting like you have something to hide (dodging her questions was your first mistake).

Based on your description, you didn’t do anything wrong in your previous relationship. You don’t need to hide or act like it’s retroactive cheating.

By the same token, your girlfriend needs to learn to not ask questions when she doesn’t actually want to hear the answers.

I’d suggest that you give her a bit more space. Give her time to miss you and to get over herself.

You’re looking at it backwards. Nobody is saying that it’s bad to help your family succeed. They’re saying that it’s fucked up that the only way gen-Z adults can afford homes is for their parents to pay their way.

Trans-people who had surgery: Afterwards did your ability to do the center of gravity type posture challenges switch?

Like, did your actual center of gravity or muscular attributes change over time to make you pass or fail where previously you had the other outcome of one of these alleged “men can’t do this but women can” type challenges?

elephantium,
@elephantium@lemmy.world avatar

FFS means “Facial feminization surgery” in this context, correct? I automatically read it as “For f#$%'s sake” and paused, thinking “No, that can’t be right.”

pointless virtue signaling

What do we want? An end to blatant racist murders by police!

What do we get? Rename our git branches!

they’re just trying to enjoy life

Maybe. A neighborhood bully went after me with a makeshift whip around that age. I lost my boot in the snow trying to run away fast enough. Most people are fine as you say. Some…are just broken.

You don’t dump five-year-olds on the side of the road

Strongly agree here. I don’t care what they were doing; they’re still kids in need of adult supervision.
