@endantisemitism i read that exchange differently, it looks like the poster is asking "how could the person who took the picture see the horrible crimes of the nazis first hand but not revolt against the nazis!?". it's a naive position, but they don't seem to be implying anything about the auschwitz museum or any modern regime?

how are you reading it?

So, I realized something while listening to the Kan news report from Israel last night:

Western pro-Palestinian protesters don't think that Hamas exists as a unified fighting force.

Many probably don't even believe that Hamas is an elected government that represents the people and fulfills governmental duties.

I think they probably think of Hamas as "a few dozen" extremists, rather than having a membership (prior to the war) of around 40,000, with a trained and well-armed military fighting force in the thousands.
And, polling in Palestine shows Hamas with over a 70% approval rating among the civilian population! During the war!

My brain just didn't realize that protesters would ignore or reject the truth, or I guess that they would unquestioningly repeat their assumptions as truth.

@noharmpun @testing I think it's worth noting that opinion polls are probably somewhat skewed bc ppl are afraid of speaking openly. The pollster could be a snitch.

@noharmpun and israel opted to remain passive from interfering in a country that israel had only months before unilaterally withdrawn from.

which is it, do these guys want israel to occupy gaza or don't they!?

This year my first 2 nites will both be vegan seders. Gotta figure out a good dish to bring to both

@raf okonomiyaki are pretty easy to do vegan (starch instead of egg).

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

@raf tzimmis might feel more traditional than okonomiyaki, if that's an issue

I'm so jet lagged I've reached the end of the internet

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

In the 90s there was a website, theendofthe.net
It was a simple HTML page that said, "welp, that's it! The end of the internet. There's no more to see. You can turn off your computer now, take care!" or something like that. The domain is available now...

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

Back in the days when you found websites by guessing a URL might exist.

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

I vaguely also remember finding if websites were useful to me by somehow manipulating the URL to find all the assets on the website. I was especially interested in .swf files for general silliness like romjul.swf and mrnice.swf. wtf is a swf file?

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

Wft is a swf file, you ask? I'll tell ya! NOTHIN! Just like Flash and Java Applets and the rest of 'em. GONE, POOF! And what have we got to show for it? Also, NOTHIN! In my day we didn't have block chains or A-eyes, we had discipline! And cigarette bubble gum, and we threatened other kids by saying our dad could beat up their dad. And he COULDA!

Shavua tov, Babkans and the rest of !

I'm trying to expand my range and try out a new prayer book. What are your favorite non-Orthodox, non-Masorti/Conservative siddurim for shabbat and weekdays? Recommendations from Sefardi or Mizrahi traditions also welcome!

Preferably English and Hebrew, no transliteration. (I've been trying to get my hands on a Siddur haKohenet for months but it's out of stock 💔)

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

@peribotsarah I found a PDF version to read and I've poured over it all morning, thanks for the recommendation!

em,

@peribotsarah yep, I really like it

People might know that there are countries where it is effectively impossible for Jews to live.

What less people know is that there are countries where Jews are not banned outright, or prevented from getting work permits by law, but are made to pay a "Jew Tax" in the form of preventing Jews from producing kosher meat, requiring them to buy foreign meat that is less available and costs a lot more.

Those countries are Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Slovenia.

These countries have a "Jew Tax" which requires their Jewish citizens to buy food at higher prices.

Canada has now joined these countries.

When I was in school and people would ask "How could people pass laws against Jews?", the answer is this... by starting with making life more difficult for Jews, then like the frog in the pot, turning up the heat.

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

@dukepaaron @vatine @serge it always feels like such a weird nitpick to me. Monocrop feed (and deforestation/soil degradation to grow that feed), abysmal cage sizes, hormones, perpetual pregnancy, separating the young from their mothers, waste (mis)management, methane and nitrous oxide emissions, destruction of wetlands for grazing and feed, industrial slaughter? That's a given. But, we want our industrialized slaughter machinations to be ethical, so y'know, fuck those out dated ancient practices.

And y'all. Sourdough vegan challah is officially my new jam. It's SO easy. Something that used to be quite hard to do for a day just became the easiest bread to bake. It's literally just:

  • mix all the ingredients (including 150g of sourdough starter) til the gluten is developed
  • braid them into beautiful challot, put them on the baking sheet in the oven (to keep them room temperature and moist)
  • wait for them to double in size (takes mine about 12 hours)
  • take them out of the oven, turn on the oven, put them back in to bake

So it's literally just mix, braid........then bake.

Why do people keep kosher very strictly, but then take the car back home from the service? And is there a reason food served in the synagogue is parve (easier with the cookware probably)?
And: Shabbat Shalom!

em,
@em@babka.social avatar

@hundertsieben the reconstructionist approach is this: if it brings you closer [to Judaism, to the community, to hashem], do that.

i.e. it's better to drive on shabbes and feel connected and enriched than to be observant and alienated. Presumably following this route in the long run will probably increase your overall level of observance, anyway.
