I made a working dice in Unity. It can tell which side is up programmatically ​:blobcat3c:​ . And no, it doesn't use any colliders or anything like that.

Simply put, the dice gets all the normals for each face and computes the dot product between the world normal (up) vector and each of the normals in the dice. The dot product that is closer to 1 has the face that is upwards.

This is because the dot product of two vectors is displaystyle{bold{u} cdot bold{v} = |bold{u}||bold{v}|cos theta} . When the angle is between -frac{pi}{2} < theta < frac{pi}{2} the dot product is between displaystyle{0 < bold{ucdot v} < 1}. So when the face is facing upwards the dot product is > 0.

The game checks which one is closer to 1 because more than one face could have a dot product > 0. But I only want the one that is closer to 1 since that's the one who is upwards.

I think the thing that makes me feel nostalgic about this era is two things. One, the fact that prebuilts were "unique" and had more quality in general. They are still IBM clones, but each computer was built differently. Nowadays all computers are just the same, but with different specs. Some have more RAM, others have less. Some have a decent GPU, others don't even have a GPU (they use an iGPU), or have a crappy chinese knock off GPU that is not what is advertised. They all suck.

And the other thing is the fact that computer stores were filled with tons of products. Specially software. Can you imagine going to a store and buying software physically? Yeah, that's how things used to work back then. And they had accessories, and consumables, wires, videogames...

Modern computer stores are pretty much empty. And their business model relies in either selling other stuff (like in tech stores, where the computer section is now a small section with a couple of prebuilts) or just tech support for companies and individuals (those are mostly empty, with some "props" that nobody will buy just to fill the windows, and they are only there to sell components (if they even have them in stock), or take your computer for repair).

This is how I remember computer stores. A bunch of computers with their screensavers. Normally it would be the text marquee screensaver, with a text describing the specifications of the computer.

To be fair, I know some stores still do that nowadays. Normally tech stores that sell prebuilt computers. But naturally they don't have screensavers anymore and it's usually just the login screen, or a video, or nothing at all (it's turn off). And it's very rare to find computer stores still alive in this era that sell prebuilts and actually showcase them outside.

If anything, it will be "props" just to fill the window and they will be turn off.

I just read an article on how hackers can hijack a phone through the usb connection when using a phone charging station, and I was thinking... what if you removed the data lines from the usb wire and only left the power and ground wires?

Would the phone still charge?
