fart_pickle,

I would have never expected the EFF to use a lame click-bait headline like this one.

Apple limits third-party browser engine work to EU devices (www.theregister.com)

The Register has learned from those involved in the browser trade that Apple has limited the development and testing of third-party browser engines to devices physically located in the EU. That requirement adds an additional barrier to anyone planning to develop and support a browser with an alternative engine in the EU....

I'm so sick of every single medical-related question people have online constantly getting spammed with 'talk to your doctor!!!!'

The way people online constantly say ‘talk to your doctor’ like it’s a panacea is a lot like how medieval peasants weren’t able to read scripture and they just had to trust their clergy’s interpretations...

fart_pickle,

If you feel sick talk to your doctor. Internet “knowledge” doesn’t work in case on medical issues. So called tips and tricks may work for a person who posted it but it could be dangerous for you. If calling a stranger (in this case a doctor’s office) invokes anxiety, talk to a therapist.

fart_pickle,

There was a question about AI and privacy. Don’t remember exactly what it was but it was something like “What do you care the most about integrating AI into products” and most of the answers were about the privacy.

fart_pickle,

ollama + openwebui. Selfhosted (hasn’t check if it tries to contact mothership yet) and pretty good with the answers, especially when ran on GPU.

fart_pickle,

Ollama seems pretty good. I’ve been playing with it recently and when combined with openwebui, it makes pretty nice local chatgpt. But I agree, there are more pressing issues I would like to see fixed/implemented.

fart_pickle,

I would be happy to see privacy respecting AI assistant in Proton products, especially Proton Mail. English is not my native language and every now and then I need to use 3rd party services to compose a professional sounding email. Having this built into Proton Mail would have made my life easier. Also, having a feature that detects and labels faces and features in the pictures stored in a Proton Drive would be an amazing addition.

fart_pickle,

Voice assistant that allows to perform common tasks like setting up calendar events, sending emails, opening apps, etc. Bonus points for “connect to server abc” and the assistant would open the terminal and ssh to abc server.

How to sync Akregator across devices?

I’m a happy user of Inoreader. I like it so much I’m considering buying a premium plan. However, I’m looking for an alternative I wouldn’t have to pay for. I came across FreshRSS. The only thing that’s keeps me from moving is the sync. I don’t want to expose it to the internet but I want to be able to access it on a...

fart_pickle,

I have a few thoughts on this. And before you downvote me, read to the end and have a genuine reflection.

  1. Europe is facing a huge problem with crimes committed by immigrants.
  2. Despite of the spin “we need a workforce to fulfill low paying, low profile jobs”, most of the so called “doctors” and “engineers” prefer to use social benefits instead of getting a job.
  3. Most of the immigrants prefer to stay in “ghettos” instead of integrating into a society they moved into.

Because of that and many more similar issues, people turn into dangerous, populist ideas. Those far-right movements prey on nations insecurities and gain support by hitting the “sweet spot”. And the worst part is that the central views get boxed as left or right winged which basically undercuts what they are tying to sell.

And just for the record, the Polish PiS party is not far right. It’s a populist, socialist party playing a church card every time it’s convenient.

fart_pickle,

I’m about to start my adventure with Raspberry Pi powered TV box. I will try Plasma big screen - plasma-bigscreen.org It seems like a good place to start.

fart_pickle,

So, here’s my input. So-called AI is today’s bubble that will burst just like the NFT did. The vast majority of AI startups will go under, and the few that survive will be bought or destroyed by big corporations. What’s left will be extremely invasive in terms of privacy and will be a new source of data breaches. The fact that people responsible for AI startups have no idea what an AI/ML is, will the process even worse.

fart_pickle,

I was talking about today’s AI - virtual assistants, bots and the good old regular complex algorithms rebranded as AI. The “real AI” will benefit from the buzz. AI/ML was around for few decades now but it lacked media attention. Since LLMs got into mainstream, I think the science will continue to grow but the “public” projects will mostly die when the bubble bursts.

Before I start, a little bit of a background story. Since I was a teenager, I’ve lost my close friends and family - suicides, health issues, tragic accidents, etc. Eventually I got to the point where the relationships with people I know and cherish were at most few years old. I cannot tell if the everyday drama made me the way I’m now or was it how I was born but I always was “alone”. Not lonely, alone. I had significant others, in fact for most of my adult life I was in a happy relationships. It’s a different story why I’m not longer in those but I have no regrets.

To answer your question, I’m pretty happy with my life. I have fulfilling career, clear plan for what’s next, some disaster recovery plan if things go awry and I go with the flow to some extent. I lived through some hard times but “whatever doesn’t kill you, simply makes you stranger”.

fart_pickle,

To me Reddit like platforms are glorified forums. And I don’t mean it as an insult.

Dell responds to return-to-office resistance with VPN, badge tracking, and color-coding of employees (arstechnica.com)

After reversing its position on remote work, Dell is reportedly implementing new tracking techniques on May 13 to ensure its workers are following the company’s return-to-office (RTO) policy, The Register reported today, citing anonymous sources....

fart_pickle,

Working from home proved that most of the people are capable of “self-managing” and don’t need a corporate drone telling them what to do. I have a feeling that the push to get back to the office is fueled by insecurities of middle management that became redundant.

fart_pickle,

How much time have you spent being single?

Not long enough.

If you’re currently single: is it by choice or circumstance?

Both.

Do you / did you enjoy single life?

Very much so.

What are / were the pros and cons?

Pros:

  • no more compromises (this covers most of the pros)
  • more money in the bank

Cons:

  • sometimes I miss someone to share something (both good and bad)

Is / was partnership a goal of yours?

Nope.

fart_pickle,

I’ve blocked 40ish instances and hundreds of communities. Everything I find boring, not interesting or trying too hard.

Which RSS aggregator do you use? I cannot seem to find one that works for me.

I cannot stand google news any more, too much spam, clickbait and advertisement. So I decided to try to selfhost an RSS aggregator to make myself a news feed that I would be comfortable with. Being RSS such an “ancient” thing I thought there will be many mature systems, but I’m not sure that’s the case…...

fart_pickle,

Try Inoreader. I’m using free plan but paid one gives a lot of features you could find interesting.

fart_pickle,

I’ve been using Inoreader for few years and there is no single thing I could complain about. It’s good enough that I’m considering buying a subscription.

fart_pickle,

In the perfect world it would be a great thing to do. Old enough people should remember SETI screensaver. But we are not living in a perfect world and I would never buy a car and participate in expenses just to make some rich clown even richer.
