Me: I need to drop off the car on Monday, and it'll be in the shop for a few days.

Also me: I don't live within walking distance of any services! How will I survive? To prepare for two days without a car, I need to buy six months worth of pantry supplies, and also a few bear traps.

BART legacy rolling stock number plates are back in stock!
And I am not ashamed to admit that I am posting this AFTER confirming that my order went through, since they sold out almost immediately with the last batch.

I liked the part where Apple announced they will finally be including microSD ports on all mobile devices going forward, so you don't have to pay an inflated surcharge for storage at build time. Little late, but it was a nice gesture.

To the multiple people who saw my joke about 5/4 on Saturday and replied with a variation of asking why it was posted Saturday, and not April 5:

Yes, very good, you are very clever and insightful.

If I owned a liquor store, I'd have 750ml bottles of tequila on sale during the entire month of May. I'd call it el Mayo de Cincos.

If you're making a video and you say "without further ado", you probably already have too much ado, and you should have reduced the amount of ado in your video to begin with.

@chipchirp Obviously. If you were actually a YouTuber, you'd say it after a 3 minute contentless introduction and 4 minute ad read for Hello Fresh.

That contact high from contribution can last far into the future. While I haven't contributed a lot to @octoprint , I've done a few things, including writing the functionality to make time-based marker events extensible.

Every time I see a completed print (where that "Cooldown" event is inserted by a plugin), I smile and think "I did that!"

as someone who has lived in both the US and EU i think the standard date formats are confusing as fuck and everyone should switch to ISO 8601 yyyy-mm-dd

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@eniko You have an international chain of stores which is famously 100% private label. You literally control the label and could use ISO 8601. THIS SIGN SHOULD NOT EXIST.

This was an Ender 3 V2 at one point, but I don’t think you can even call it “a modified Ender 3 V2” anymore. It’s had so many mods done to it, the latest being a direct drive extrusion conversion, that it can best be described as “a 3D printer”.

Legacy BART Train Number Plates are back in stock 😍

So I finally ordered one!

https://www.railgoods.com/bart-legacy-train-number-plate.html

Along with the new BRIO-compatible legacy fleet trio of trains, to go with the rest of our collection #trains #bart

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@pleia2 Oh sure, they were probably in stock back when you posted this, back in... uhh, 4 minutes ago

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@pleia2 Yep, I'll keep a look out and will likely order one if I see if it's in stock again. Thanks!

I lived in the Bay Area for a little under 2 years, back in 2000/2001. Pretty much every weekday I took BART into and out of SF, as well as every few weekends. I wonder what the odds are I ever traveled in any given car.

What was the first keyboard with an inverted T arrow key layout? The Model M would be the safe guess, but I'm willing to bet there is probably an obscure predecessor.

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@penryu From a quick image search, it looks like they looked at a LK-201 and a Commodore keyboard and mashed them together for the original model. (It appears there was a later model which more directly copied the Model M).

My life's work. :) Still poking at it after all these years .... :D <3

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@brooke While I haven't contributed much, MediaWiki (when they starting using Gerrit) was my first introduction to a more direct contribution model.

"Wait, I can just submit a patch, someone else reviews it, and it's accepted and I'm directly listed as the author of the commit? I don't have to convince some random person with push access to commit it themselves and hope they put 'submitted by Ryan' in the commit message?"

foo,
@foo@fosstodon.org avatar

@brooke Oh yeah, I definitely remember that new "git" thing being utterly incomprehensible compared to cvs/svn (and the hooks required for actually submitting to Gerrit didn't make it easier), but the payoff was worth it.

To be fair, git is probably still incomprehensible to newcomers (no idea how you could keep status straight without e.g. git-prompt), but I've had a decade or so to get comfortable.

This is a repost of an old popular Twitter post I made years ago. It actually required some work to get the animation to look good again; Twitter was fine with me uploading a gif of two 20ms frames and it would loop correctly, but the default Mastodon client wouldn't work well.
