Spent the weekend playing various intensive Steam games on my Framework Laptop 16 - dGPU switching just magically happens when you launch a game - no DRI_PRIME needed on Framework Laptop AMD images of Bazzite. And they're just getting warmed up. https://bazzite.gg

Also, on my Framework Laptop 13 running Bluefin - look to the upper left corner at the launcher. Yeah, and Bluefin is just warming up.

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

Don't see the Bluefin link - added: https://projectbluefin.io/

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

@DJGummikuh On Bazzite (at least on KDE), you will want to install Mission Center, maximize, then watch your GPU(s) for activity. When you launch a Steam game, VGA switcheroo does it's magic. On Bluefin, Mission Center is pre-installed. Alt-tab out of the game will allow you to see which GPU is active - but out of the box, the fact that Helldivers 2 runs full screen, almost maxed out, is an indicator of dGPU usage. ;)

Does anybody have experience how long a new framework 13 with AMD (so DDR5) does take for the memory training on first boot?
I'm on 10+ minutes and wondering if my memory is flawed (Crucial 2x16GB CT2K16G56C46S5)

frameworkcomputer,

@rhalina Let it sit for a bit longer. If it still isn't working, please open a support ticket for next steps.

This has been in the works for some time. With help from the NixOS community, we're set up to begin the process of introducing NixOS as a Community support distro.

NixOS community will be helping Framework with docs and related and we will provide hardware to those selected.

Some details being ironed out. This is a method of ensuring NixOS users identified as ideal candidates (a couple of selected people) can help us ensure we have Framework docs in place.

@AudraTran Great question. This is part of a larger project for 2024 and 2025 - community distro support. Community members active on community distros, already providing support/docs for these projects will be invited. Debian among others are welcome once I account it for other distros.

We ended up with massively more applicants for the community fundraise than the 100 slots we have space for. We've closed the form and are sorting through applications now.

Hi @frameworkcomputer! Thanks for the reminder email about BIOS update because !

I tried to update the Framework 13 AMD according to the help page and it does not work. :blobcatsadpats:

I get an "update progess: completed" from H2OFFT but then the screen goes black, device stays powered on but is unresponsive. I forced a shutdown (hold power button) after 2 hours. On booting again I get "Update Failed! EFI Error Code 2, Decompress failed!"

Any pointers?

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

@grob please try again, making sure it's done via Fedora 39/40 as it has been flawless on Fedora.

Find out which bios you're actually on, may be a conflict here.

sudo dnf install lshw dmidecode -y && sudo dmidecode | grep -A3 'Vendor:|Product:' && sudo lshw -C cpu | grep -A3 'product:|vendor:'

If older than 3.05 BIOS, continue below.

@florian_l Appreciate the feedback. Yes, some of the earlier generations are held back from LVFS due to a bug we were running into with those specific Intel configs.

All AMD releases however, have had multiple BIOS releases over LVFS.

Join project founder @jorge and @ChrisShort tonight at 8pm EDT as they walk through an installation of Bluefin on a brand new Framework.

We raised a $17M Series A-1 fundraising round to continue to deepen support for our existing customers, scale the reach of our products, and expand into new product categories. We're also opening a $1M community fundraise to enable 100 people to invest alongside our VCs.

You can check out more around the fundraise and learn about the community funding in our blog post:

Almost all of the modules that make up Framework Laptop 16 are now in stock in the Framework Marketplace, for the DIY purists who need to build from parts.

(We don't actually recommend doing this. It will result in a ton of extra packaging and shipping overhead. You can just buy a Framework Laptop 16 DIY Edition, take it fully apart, and pretend we shipped it to you that way.)

Our focus is building products to last through upgrade and repair, and software is a critical part of that. This morning we shared more around our BIOS and driver update process to enable software longevity.

https://frame.work/blog/enabling-software-longevity

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

We fell short of where we needed to be on software updates, and we are making the necessary investments to not just deliver more timely releases, but also to communicate more broadly when we do.

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

Obviously, our words here are not enough. We need to and commit to demonstrating the results of these investments. We released new BIOS versions for our AMD laptops this week, with updaters for both Windows and Linux, and a release for Intel 12th Gen on Windows last week.

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

We'll continue to update you in our community channels as we release further updates, and we're developing additional notification methods for software updates as well.

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

@danderson @warthog9 Correct, we are on LVFS and actually working closely with the LVFS maintainer.

Seeing @frameworkcomputer talk about their new software team is good, but that email also raises the question why they don't upload to /

https://fwupd.org/lvfs/vendors/#framework

frameworkcomputer,
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org avatar

@razze We do. I am looking at BIOS updates for FW16 and FW13 in LVFS right now. We also have a recent FPReader update as well. We do show up in the search results, however, the data shown is dated. As it sits now:

Framework Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen 7040 System Update

Framework Laptop 16 AMD Ryzen 7040 System Update

Framework Fingerprint Sensor Upgrade Fingerprint Reader Update

frameworkcomputer,

@razze Both of the laptop updates recently moved from testing to stable.
