Is there a difference between "biking" and "cycling" for you as terms for using a push bike? Do the sentences "I biked to work" and "I cycled to work" mean different things if it's clear you meant a push bike in both cases? "I went biking" vs. "I went cycling"?

garicgymro,
@garicgymro@toot.wales avatar

@nic interesting! For me I have a distinction in English ("biking" more for off-road and "cycling" more for on-road) but in Welsh I have "beicio" for both; I don't really use "seiclo", but I hear and see it.

One of the most hilariously inept descriptions of Welsh I've seen

Good to know... Good to know... Sort of the opposite of the real explanation for why Cornish and Welsh are similar, but we can't have everything, I guess.

Ah yes, the famously simple grammar of Welsh and Breton...

A nice example of a difference in ideals. In America—where the ideal is not to leave dirty dishes on the table any longer than necessary—you'd expect most of this to have been cleared when they brought the second coffees. In the UK the ideal is to minimise bothering the customer.

@gotofritz disagree. I do not think British people on the whole would be happy at all if pubs switched to table service, and they tend to get irritated much more by servers interrupting them to do things like clear tables than they do by having dishes left on the table. It's not as if they're not cleared once you leave, so no effort is saved. (As for toilets, I don't find they tend to be in a worse state in either the US or the UK.)

garicgymro,
@garicgymro@toot.wales avatar

@gotofritz I disagree that it's about not wanting to pay for it. I really think it's mostly about a difference in experience. To put it another way: If you offered groups of British people a choice between a pub with table service and a pub where you buy rounds at the bar, with everything else (including cost!) being equal, I think most would pick the one where you buy rounds at the bar.

garicgymro,
@garicgymro@toot.wales avatar

@gotofritz it's like eating your fish and chips out of a bag with your fingers (or a little wooden fork) or eating it from a plate with metal cutlery. Some people don't care; a few might prefer the plate; most, in my experience, very much prefer the fingers and bag option and might even (albeit grumblingly) pay a little extra for that if they had to!

It's often pointed out that spelling bees are a peculiarly American phenomenon, little known in even other anglophone countries. This is generally true. It's interesting therefore to find this reference to one in a 1940s Welsh novel!
