Have you given a name to your clean laundry pile? Ours is called Tim

georgeharito,

@jpm I’ve given a name to my microwave. It’s Chef Mike, a nod to the Kitchen Nightmares episode where Gordon Ramsay visits a Greek restaurant in Chicago, and the food was really terrible. He asked behind the counter in the kitchen who cooked the meal, and someone said “Chef Mike”. Naturally, Gordon asked to have a chat with Chef Mike, in which he was introduced to the kitchen microwave. All the food at the restaurant was prepared the night before by the head chef’s mum and aunt, and was zapped in the microwave on demand the next day as orders came in.

Film cameras and cassette tapes are making a comeback. Why though?

Nostalgia? Curiosity? Marketing?

georgeharito,
@georgeharito@mastodon.au avatar

@jpoh Minidisc is also making a small comeback too. More than cassettes I think!

georgeharito,
@georgeharito@mastodon.au avatar

@jpoh @decryption ye olde digital camera point and shoots are making a comeback too. In /r/nikon which I moderate, there’s been a noticeable uptick in Coolpix questions and photo submissions.

The kids call them ‘digicams’ (I shudder when they call them those, digicams to me are different devices). They really just want a camera that prints the date in bright orange in one corner, to them that’s the aesthetic they’re going after.

    @decryption I like the taking photos for Wikipedia one, I should look at doing that myself.

    @decryption Yeah I should really consider contributing. I use Wikipedia so much, time to give back I reckon. (I’ve already donated a couple of times and the foundation is definitely not short of funds)

    I tried to see this replica 16th century pirate ship that one guy built over 10 years but apparently it sails around and is not a permanent fixture. So doing my obligatory visit to Urangan Pier.

    You can see why the pier is so long 868m (originally 1.1km) when the tide is out like this. Also saw an Australasian Darter on the pier.

    And Australasian Darter on a pier railing.

    Have you seen the trending video on TikTok / Instagram where someone’s walking down the street, but trips over and their credit card beeps over a card terminal, and they then indulge in their favourite past time or item?

    That was me this morning with a crank handle for my Bronica ETRSi medium format film camera. These stupid little crank handles go for $120+ AUD on eBay, but I was watching one from the UK that was ending this morning and it was still at £25 so I chucked a bid in for shits and giggles, and got it for £26.

    Of course after GST, shipping and import tax it ends up being about $95 AUD but that’s what you get for tripping over while walking on the street.

    Staring into the abyss that is auth0 / Salesforce / Laravel / SAML.

    georgeharito,
    @georgeharito@mastodon.au avatar

    @dbarros As a seasoned PHP developer, Laravel is quite solid. The docs need some improvement though.

    I’ve been having fun with Vue as well (just to learn something different) but it’s no PHP/Laravel.

    I’ve done some React tutorials, and it’s really me being blindfolded and bumping into walls in pitch black darkness.

    georgeharito,
    @georgeharito@mastodon.au avatar

    @dbarros I’d say give Vue a go anyway, you might or might not like it. At least you can say you have it a go!

    @decryption Just buy a spare 8-port gigabit switch. Then 2 weeks later after purchasing one, you will find the first spare 8-port gigabit switch that you thought you had but then discovered you didn’t. Now you will have two spare 8-port gigabit switches.

    @jpm AFAIK you don’t hand the phone over to them, you unlock your phone and show them the screen, they have a QR code scanner to get the details. Your phone doesn’t leave your possession.

    Every time I go to my local rubbish tip, a small part of me dies.

    "I've got one bit of e-waste, this LED headlight has a bunch of electronics in it.

    "No worries mate, just chuck that in the general waste."

    😿

    So, naturally, I brought it back home and stripped it down (1/2)

    A headlight with the lens removed and various pieces of broken plastic sitting around it, plus screwdrivers and pliers

    georgeharito,
    @georgeharito@mastodon.au avatar

    @projectgus @jpm Same thing happens at my tip. I went with about half a boot full of e-waste (mainly broken appliances accumulated over 10 years), the other half was general rubbish. I went to the general rubbish area and pulled the general rubbish stuff out, but couldn’t find the e-waste section. Found a worker there, asked him the question, response was “yeah just chuck it all in the general rubbish section”.

    The marketing flyers from my council make it sound like this stuff gets sorted and disposed of responsibly, but the reality is that it all goes into the same hole in the ground. Very frustrating.
