I was wondering when these would show up. AAA can’t just rely on a jerrycan of gas anymore.

I keep seeing calls for missing middle housing in SFH neighborhoods but very few calls for legalizing commercial/mixed use.

Densifying residential only will be a disaster, that makes car traffic and parking worse as everyone still has to drive for all errands. Cities have to legalize all aspects of a dense neighborhood or they will fail.

Solar power is so cheap that Amazon villages are using it to provide free services for all, like solar powered water buses and internet, while dramatically reducing water and air pollution.

This is what the oil industry is fighting against.

Last week was my first time really looking into what settings are available to admins who run their own instance. I was a bit surprised to find there isn't much there. At least through masto.host. I don't think they hide settings though. Only some of the deeper technical stuff.

getalifemike,
@getalifemike@urbanists.social avatar

@mastohost @polotek consider increasing the Sidekiq concurrency on all plans? Double it? It won’t increase RAM much but will decrease your support load and scale better for all.

getalifemike,
@getalifemike@urbanists.social avatar

@mastohost do you have an http cache tier in front of the Ruby hosts? Seems like Varnish or similar could take a huge load off Ruby.

Fascinating. A typical budget Android phone (the Samsung A24) in 2023 is approx as fast as the iPhone 6s was in 2015. And the premium S23 is roughly as fast as the iPhone 11 in 2019. From https://infrequently.org/2024/01/performance-inequality-gap-2024/

Uh oh. E-bike shops are getting massive insurance rate increases if they work on non-UL certified electrical systems.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ebikes/comments/19d7l4l/ebikes_and_the_bike_shop_it_might_be_over/

I'm guessing that a year from now, you won't be able to get any service for DTC brands like Rad Power or Super73 from local bike shops if they weren't certified.

If you're shopping for a new e-bike, your #1 criteria should be UL certification.

I was reading this article on California's plans to ban gas-powered lawn mowers in 2024 and came across a claim that blew my mind: apparently "1 hour use of a gas-powered lawn mower releases as much pollution as a Toyota Camry does over 300 miles."

What??

I did a quick search and found a few other sources that said the same thing. Gas-powered lawn mowers pollute WAY more than cars do. Phasing them out seems like a no-brainer?

https://carboncredits.com/californias-bold-shift-say-goodbye-to-carbon-emission-gas-powered-lawn-mowers-by-2024/

getalifemike,
@getalifemike@urbanists.social avatar

@erinwhalen it refers to SOx and NOx pollution which is handled by the catalytic converter in cars, not CO2.

2023 study: “Our thesis is that a primary cause of the rise in mental disorders is a decline over decades in opportunities for children and teens to play, roam, and engage in other activities independent of direct oversight and control by adults."

The lede is buried but the primary cause is the rise of suburban housing with little green space and unsafe streets dominated by cars.
