It took a full eight hours to uncork the font, but I was finally able to write the 600-800 words I needed to write today for quarterly work stuff.

@kboyd eight hours to uncork comic sans? that’s gotta be a record.

schoolhouse rock basically ruined me because every time someone says "what's happening?" my first reaction is to say "verb".

half the star trek tng episodes start with “we are transporting <important cargo or person> to <star or base> <number>”. the entire series is based on interstellar doordash runs that go wrong.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

this makes sense. the wild frontier of tos has given way to the relative stability of the federation in tng. the boldly-going has been replaced by the necessary tedium of management. kirk shoots from the hip; picard runs effective meetings.

a natural and necessary progression.

this is less of a 'many-to-many' relationship and more of a 'whatever-to-whatever' relationship

@meejah i just replaced all the xref tables with genxref 'cos, y'know, whatever.

a “canadian exit” is when you try to leave and wind up holding the door for six other people.

if any of the gpt enthusiasts had ever said “this tool allows people who speak english as a second language to lower the language barrier in work and in seeking employment”, i would have said “sounds great!”

but not one of them has said that to me ever. not even once.

@kboyd yes, yes, no, yes, no i think.

c'mon. bender? he'd totally vote for trump to 'stick it to the elites'.

I'm trying to go to Thunder Bay (don't ask why) and Delta legitimately said, you can't get there from here.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@ieatkillerbees as someone who has driven both the north route through thunder bay and the south route through chicago several times, allow me to say that avoiding two dakotas and a manitoba is money we’ll spent.

@ieatkillerbees unless you stop in duluth and decide to move there.

do not laugh. it has happened.

After almost 10 years my checkmark at the bird site is gone. Laugh all you want, it meant something at the time I got it and my audience I had there no longer means anything. The smug “you are hanging out with Nazis” folks had it wrong. That was where I found folks interested in what I had to say about programming and testing. I made sure to not interact with problematic people there but fuck me for being there, right? How dare I go where my audience was.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer @syntaxseed i had a secret alt account with 9kish followers that was focused on certain, uh, political things, and it did very well; like 1k+ likes all the time. quoted in forbes and the g&m. walking away from that was not easy at all.

people create content because, in no small part, they want what cory doctorow would call the 'whuffie': likes, reads, retoots. that stuff.

if all that content just becomes grist for the ai mill and people go to some gpt for their content, that whuffie, and the motivation to keep creating training data, dries up.

ai is designed to starve itself.

i was going to wait to tell the “who called it ‘secret santa’ instead of ‘non-disclosure claus’?” joke until it was closer to christmas, but i figured i’d totally forget, so i’m telling it now.
