I see that Landscape (the guy behind the Stereo Field and Noon) has a new product that's a handheld string resonator similar to an Ebow. On top of looking very sci-fi, you can vary the vibration via CV. Pretty compelling.

@stevenray that looks really interesting - different excitation method than an ebow, which I haven't seen before

Coming to the end of writing revisions to a conferemce paper. Now 350 words over the maximum, and one of the comments was already that it was too long.
This process is really bloody hard.

Trying to wrap my head around something which outwardly appeared simple with Arduino code. Took 6 pages of notes, several graphs and about 2hrs deep concentration, and came out the other end as about 4 lines of code.
Hope it works, it's a slow process for me but quite satisfying.

Video from my last live set at Iklectik online now: https://youtu.be/1EfWWZHavuI?si=2QSbyFI_MK6x02xE
I included various new devices and builds in the performance, some of which worked better than others.

  • worm gear long-loop percussion
  • new modular synth sound sources (slight bugs)
  • magnetic tape record (minor failure)
  • multiple webcams for projection and documentation
  • strobe light kick drum trigger via rotator cuff (mostly ineffective)

Enjoyed the performance though, great atmosphere in a packed room - nice you can see folks dancing in the video. A great send off to Iklectik's Waterloo space (this was the penultimate event there).

Next month I'm running the Hackney Half-marathon for St Joseph's Hospice, a local charity which, amongst other things runs a great bereavement counselling service. If you can spare a bit of money, please consider sponsoring me here:

What are some nice tracks that have everything hard panned either left or right? Particularly tracks beyond the early stereo era when crazy panning was the default. Orbital's input out is one example but there must be more examples.. People should do this more

grahamdunning,
@grahamdunning@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu I think one of the recent @disquiet Junto projects resulted in tracks with three contributors, each fully panned left, centre, right.

@grahamdunning@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu Also this odd record that has a different genre on each channel, the mix between the two at the listener's discretion: https://www.instagram.com/p/BrV4K9_lhna

grahamdunning,
@grahamdunning@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu A quick blast of this on headphones and it seems the rhythm section is all panned centrally - I was fully expecting total separation

Five ways of using contact mics

Following on from the recent post about DIY turntable styluses, here are some other uses for contact mics. When I used to teach the Experimental Sound Art evening class I made four suggestions for ways to use contact mics: amplifying small objects, amplifying large objects, amplified surfact (scraping table), and making an 'instrument'. These are covered below, but I'm glad now to add 'DIY stylus' as a fifth category.

DIY styluses for playing mangled-up records

I was asked recently for some advice about turntable styluses for playing broken and mangled records. Flo from Plattenbau Kru - who use stickers, scratches, cracks and breaks to modify their vinyl - said the 'project is using up A LOT', as might be expected. Offering a couple of suggestions led me down a bit of a rabbit hole, thinking about how people use alternatives to standard cartridges and needles to generate different effects.

New blog post: I went to visit Furrowed Sound, aka Dylan Beattie last week, to check out his lathe cutting setup and how he uses it live - physically sampling to a record in real time.

@grumpygamer one of my favourite signs is the road sign pointing the way to the Kelvedon Hatch secret nuclear bunker. Now a museum, so less need for secrecy. But an amusing sign.

Having enjoyed exploring the blogosphere a bit through RSS feeder (and somewhat inspired by Simon Reynolds' recent guardian article on blogging) I've been considering setting up an informal blog, for bits of interesting research, unusual sound-related things, etc.
I'm a bit wary of the time-sink it might become, so planned to use the currently redundant 'posts' part of my (wordpress.com hosted) website. Unfortunately there are dozends (hundreds?) of old posts there from when I used to add one for every gig, release etc I did, which I'd not really want to be accessible as they would muddy the waters. There is no 'batch edit' to revert them to drafts - the only way to access the appropriate plug-in would be signing up to 'creator' mode for, get this, £240 a year!
So the other option is manually change each one, which i don't have time for. Or set up a new blog elsewhere, which again feels like time-sink territory.
Will think on.

RSS Feed Recommendations please!
I'm trying to tweak my casual reading habits away from doomscrolling news headlines, and have recently installed an RSS app for this (Feeder). So far I've not done much searching! I'm just following Simon Reynolds' blissblog, Klang Magazine and @yaxu's blog - would love some more recommendations so I hopefully get to the point I have a few interesting bits to read each day.
Ideal topics would be music making, D&D, old technology, bouldering.

I blogged on "Luigi Russolo, Futurist and Fascist". Russolo is frequently referenced uncritically, even with an electroacoustic music prize awarded in his name, so a few things need to be said..

grahamdunning,
@grahamdunning@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu I thought it was well known that the futurists were fascists in general, and have always applied this to Russolo by association too. Have always found it a little uncomfortable when he's referenced without this caveat.

Absolutely terrified by the concept of a pneumatic hot glue gun SPRAY.

I have enough self-inflicted hot glue injuries to know that I should be legally restricted from owning one for your safety.

This is quite fun - a Scrapheap Challenge style TV show from the early 80s - this episode the three teams are tasked with making a mechanically played recorder!
The teams variously use piano rolls and pin barrels for sequencing, and water pressure for air production. Some interesting bits including running the piano roll backwards, lots of overblowing and some pretty successful contraptions.
