Jocelyn, of course, is the discoverer of pulsars, and the most famous pulsar is that which lives at the heart of the Crab Nebula, the remnant of a supernova that exploded nearly a millennium ago.

(The name pulsar, short for pulsating radio source, describes their often very rapid blinking. I hadn’t realised the name had been coined by a Daily Telegraph reporter who thought the scientists’ name was too long)

Yesterday at Oxford Physics we threw an 80th birthday party for Jocelyn Bell Burnell, discoverer of pulsars and all-round inspiration. After talks on pulsars and gravitational waves, and before the dinner, Jocelyn told us a few stories from her life.

Some I’d heard before, others - like the fact that the 50 male members of her undergraduate class would bang on their desks and whistle whenever she, the only woman, walked in. (1/n)

This was where we went this year. I mowed 1.5 mower widths around the edges and left an area near our bench. The rest is just doing its thing. Loads of bugs. When the season is over, I’ll strim the top off and see what happens next year. We may also bombard the area with wildflower and clover seeds.

If you're a National Trust member, please please vote in the council elections to stop the reactionary "Restore Trust" candidates. They're a bunch of right-wing reactionaries who get all upset when the Trust explains to visitors the history of colonialism, slavery and class oppression behind the wealth of many of the great country houses. Please give them the boot!

Interesting that the Nobel Foundation have invited a Russian representative to the ceremonies next month. A lot of people think it's a bad idea and so do I. Like sport, academic prizes are always spun politically. Russia's government should be treated like a pariah and not given opportunities/fodder to spread more of their poison abroad or at home.

People seem to be settling on calling Elon Musk's social media dumpster fire "Xitter". I study classical Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, and in the Spanish transliteration of that language, "x" is pronounced "sh" (so e.g. "xochitl" is approximately "SHOH-cheet"). It seems to me that this pronunciation is quite appropriate for use in "Xitter". Tezcatlipoca would approve. 🙃

It applies in Portuguese too. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw people calling it Xitter. So apt!

I wore a mask for the first half of the conference last week, but with Sapporo going through a heat wave, the humidity was pretty high even inside. So… I masked less and less.

Now I have a 39C fever, a developing cough on an over-tight chest, headache and joint pains.

    And… my friends… regrets.

Am now splashed on the sofa pondering the irony of getting sick while demonstrating the value of online virtual spaces.
